Cenex Oil drums/dealers

Sort of off the wall question in a way.

Back in the day my late Dad always got his tractor oil/filters from the local Cenex dealer in my hometown. That place closed long ago and a check online finds not so many dealers that carry the lubricants anymore. Nearest to the farm probably 15 miles and next one 30.

There is 1 and maybe 2 empty 55 gal oil drums in the shed what had cenex oil in them. The last one I emptied doing a oil change on one of the antique tractors a few years ago.

Do these have any deposit value and can I exchange them for full ones anymore? I would expect the drums date to the mid 90s.

What do folks do for bulk oil nowadays? The new equipment must have huge fill capacities for oil and hydraulics.

There is no value to them that I know of.

Might look around see if anyone sells them, they might take them but probably won't pay anything.

Even scrap yards won't take them unless that are cut open and clean.

I haven't seriously looked for bulk oil, but what I did find was no better price than buying 5 gallon buckets. Nobody wants to have to handle and load barrels.

I definitely remember the 55 gal oil barrels. As Steve said, nobody wants to handle them today. Which made me think of how did the bulk truck driver get those barrels loaded and unloaded? He worked alone so there must have been a lift or hoist of some kind.

Barrels bring 10 to 15 bucks around here, cut the top out, poke some hole in the side and bottom and you got a burn barrel.

I still get my oil in bulk. Available in 55 or 30. I use the thirties. No deposit or credit on drum but if I set it out the delivery guy will take it. They send them to a steam
cleaner and refill them.

Ever sawmill or construction site you go by here in Tennessee you will see a rip roaring fire in a barrel these cold days. Workers walk by and warm up.

(quoted from post at 18:07:34 01/31/19) lift gate 480 lbs

Guess you didn't know our local Gulf Oil "Jobber" "Red Ellingson" back in the 70's.

He'd roll a 55 gallon drum of motor oil out of one of the side compartments on his bulk truck, set it up, and manhandle it to where you wanted it. NO "liftgate" needed.

A LOST art, apparently.

Ron probably knew him or some of his brethren!

Some people (myself included) use then to store waste oil in!!!! Have couple shops around that burn waste oil for heat and will pick up the full barrels!!!

Back in the 1980's when I worked in the Mines, the Mine got all of it's Oil in 55 Gal. drums from Mobil Oil Co. ( couple Hundred drums at a
time - $20. Deposit per Drum ) and the delivery truck would haul back the empties.

Google - 55 gal steel drum for sale - you'd be amazed at how many people are selling drums, they're even for sale on e-Bay. LOL

You might also Google - Myers Container Corporation - to see if they have a recycling center near you. They are a large nationwide
corporation that does recycling of drums, and sells New & clean Used drums (both closed & open top).

(quoted from post at 19:56:45 01/31/19) Where is it legal to burn in a barrel?

All over the rural areas around me, and in many of the small kansas towns as well. I burn my waste oil in a fire pit in the city and it is legal as long as the pit is under a certain disameter. Also burn tree limbs and sticks in that pit. I have never burned trash in it as it is easier to put it in the roller cart for the landfill.

The guy I get oil from takes them back as an exchange deal or deposit depending on if you have a barrel or not. Some of them will only take their barrels back and nobody else's. We get oil in barrels for hydand engine. I even buy anti-feeze in barrels.
