Dairying in sub-zero weather

I know Bruce has a tie-stall setup, which would be nice and cozy these days (probably a little too cozy in summer- LOL). But what about the bigger operators who have converted to parlors and free-stall barns? How do they keep teats from freezing?

In a free stall barn, the cattle will still have a bedded stall in which to lie....either straw, sand or shavings, and as long as they are draft free, they are fine. The person milking can get pretty cold though.

smart alec answer.......somebody brings them inside! It is amazing. And how can they fly in this stuff? A human's eyes would freeze. Nature provides....humans usually mess it up. Haha.

Draft-free- The free stall barns around here are pretty open- so do you close doors to keep the wind out? I do remember seeing many high producing cows with big udders laying in free stalls with udders exposed.

Most barns here have roll up curtains that stay down in cold weather, doors are kept closed and fans move air as required. Not warm by any means and the manure can freeze on the slats, but cows freezing does not happen often.

I have been helping a neighbor who has health issues milk in a double 10 swing parlor in SEMN. When it is below 0, buy the time we get done, the entire parlor has ice hanging on it! Yesterday the waste water pipe froze up and the waste water backed up in the parlor. I got so #%@&! cold, I shivered the rest of the day!

How do birds keep their feet from freezing?
It's the way their circulatory system works in their legs. If I can find it, their is a video on YouTube that explains it better than I can.
