chain saw mag. question

I have an old Echo chain saw that has lost it's fire. The owner bought a new coil with no change. The electronic unit seems to change continuity as the magnets pass it. 1.2 ohms are present on the primary windings, but the secondary [spark plug] winding has zero continuity to the ground lug of the coil. Is the new one bad?

"winding has zero continuity to the ground lug of the coil"

By zero continuity do you mean it has zero ohms or do you mean no continuity as in infinite resistance?

If zero ohms it sounds shorted. If infinite resistance you may not be using a high enough ohm scale on your meter

When you say ground lug do you mean the tab for the ground wire or the place the mount screw secures it to the cylinder? If its the tab, there is probably a diode in there.

I have recently had loss of spark on a couple of 35 year old 2 stroke weed whips, both electronic. I had a spare ignition module and it did no good. Had to clean the entire engine REAL good with carb cleaner and that solver the problem. Amazing how a little dirt and oil can stop a spark.
