Ok. I have a jacket that was my great grandfathers. I have documentation that tells it was purchased in 1907. It is made from a Galloway steer. To look at it you would think it’s bear. My question is how should I care for it? It has been kept in a dry cleaning bag for the last 50 years, but I’m wondering if it should be treated with something to keep the hide soft.

I have a leather jacket I inherited from my father. This jacket was purchased by him as a young man. He was born in 1897. I clean it with saddle
soap and then treat it with saddle oil. Will treat it twice with saddle oil, about 2 weeks apart. The leather is still very supple. I wear this
jacket at times riding my motor cycles. I treat my motorcycle jackets the same way.

I it is a hide with fur, seek help from a furrier. It might take a minor investment to make it stable and historic. Probably worth it for the family. My wife
has firs that are 30 to 50 years old and they are kept good by pros. (We are not way wealthy, they were deals.) Jim

Interesting what is passed down from family members. Our family has a pare of riding gloves that belonged to my Great Grand Father. Stan

I have a tanned Highland bull hide that looks like a bear. I tell the curious I killed a Kodiak bear on Alaskan safari but my wife always spoils my joke. "Stop that god-awful lyin'".
