Lots of talk about snow lately

Been a strange winter for us. Here we are half way through January and I haven?t move snow once. Seems like a lot of talk about big storms through out the Midwest, and we often get the weather the west had 2-3 days later. So even though there isn?t hardly enough snow to make a boot print, I unhooked the manure spreader, and hooked up the snow blower, I am ready. Not many years have gone by that we haven?t had at least one good dump of snow, so bring it on. If it doesn?t happen, guess I?ll have to go back to manure spreading.

Same thing over here across the lake in Michigan. No snow what so ever. We had a little bit of a freezing mist day before yesterday that left quite a sparkling site on everything yesterday when the sun came out. We could use a foot of snow to move around to fill the frozen ruts everywhere. Things are tore up pretty bad from handling bales and feeding cattle. I have to drive pretty slow for fear of breaking something.

When you get done with the feeding this morning, take a bucket of water and a brush and wash that back window. You will appreciate it when the time comes to use blower. Of course now that you are ready, it probably won't snow.

Our ground here turned white back in early Nov. and stayed that way. Temps hovered around the freezing point and rarely ever saw any resemblance of sun until this week.We have finally had some sunny clear days, but the temp has been hovering in the single digits and low teens. We were 1 below this morning and now 14F with lots of sunshine. At least it looks nice outside, instead of dark and gloomy.
The weather watchers are saying that the monster snow storm is supposed to arrive here overnight Sat-Sunday night with around 16" of snow fall.
I have plowed the driveway only once this season. The neighbor stopped buy the other day a made a pass at the end of the driveway to clear the plow bank. The state and town both seem to think that they need to ware out cutting edges and make divots along the shoulder of the roads with the wings though. I think the state has put down as many inches of salt on US 20 here as we have had inches of snow.
The weather watchers have had nothing to hype so far this winter, so they are jumping all over this impending storm.

I'm in western NY, not in a notorious snow belt but can still get dumped on. Forecast is for some big time snow this weekend and big time cold after it. On the snow they are still trying to determine the path to know how big time the storm will be. We haven't had much here yet - some snow last November. This my last winter having to get up and go to work so I was hoping it would be one of those winters where we get virtually nothing but its not looking good.

at least they use salt.

Indiana DOT (at least the northern areas, the ones that need it) refuse to put salt out and refuse to plow until everyone is at school and work. DUH> so it becomes a packed sheet of ice that they cannot plow. what about getting your buts up and plowing before we go to work?? shoot Ohio puts salt down BEFORE it snows. anyway enough rant about the dot.

we haven't had much snow here at all and until this we had been "mild". maybe 5 inches total for the winter. My folks in North Carolina have had three times that. we were looking at 5 to 9 inches here for Saturday but now looking like "Maybe" 1 to 3. who knows. DOn't understand this global warming nonsence of predicting a 1 degree global temperature increase over the next 30 years causing a catastrophe if we don't do something about it. THey need to get the 3 day forecast right before they worry about 1 degree over 30 years!

wow.. i'm ranting again..

I am in northwest lower Michigan, typically a heavy snow belt area. After the last couple years of moving snow, and as I am certainly getting older, my wife finally said we either need to move or you need to get a tractor dedicated to moving snow. I bought a 1992 Kubota L2650 with a Sims cab and a front mount blower, and added a rear 6 foot blade. Tractor is in excellent shape, and only has 1300 hours on it. It would work perfect except this winter so far we really haven't gotten any snow. Currently have about 6 inches on the ground, which is nothing for our area in the middle of January. I have moved snow a few times, more to practice than a necessity, and have done most with the back blade. I have been calling the Kubota my snow prevention device. It is working well and I am ok with that.

I was going to add the same reply. You could call that a poopy window. Long ago when there had been an ice storm my dad would take the spreader and drive down the driveway with it. Gives you great traction. Drive up and down a few times to make nice straight guide ruts. Freezes pretty quick so hop to it. Yes the spring time you will need to wash the cars and trucks a few times. The absolute BEST was when the trucks would spread coal cinders from power plants. Acts like very aggressive sand.

Mid November we had a bunch of rain, then it turned over to snow, and we had several inches of heavy, wet snow. That was a mess to push. At least the grandchildren from NC had lots of fun here at Thanksgiving!

Then the weather since has bounced around the freezing point. A bunch of rain. Some 50 degree days. A few flurries. Then a week ago we got enough snow to plow. Very light fluffy stuff. So- plowable snow, almost two months apart!

There was still a little pile of ice from the mid November snow when I plowed this time! Temperatures now are at least acting like winter.

I recall my Dad getting a load of light plant cinders for our driveway. I'm sure they are now classified as a hazardous material since the come from those nasty (wink) coal powered power plants. gobble

Thanks psimmer! I'm in SW lower MI. and appreciate your effort. We too are close enough to the big lake that we regularly get massive dumps of lake effect snow. I think rrlund is inland a little more than I, so maybe not as much lake effect for him. Usually this time of year we'd be walking on foot paths that if you drop off to the side you're in thigh deep. For several years I kept meticulous records and it wasn't unusual to get 10-12 foot per year. The last couple of years haven't been nearly as much. I understand we're supposed to get an artic blast this weekend, if we do it should give us some snow, that is if it comes out of the NW flowing over the warm lake water, and not just drop down from the north. I'm hoping for out of the north.

Don't bother me with your "winter storm warning" just because of 6-8".....let me know if it's going be a foot or more. 6" is just a dusting and 8" is a sneeze.

Less than an inch of snow on the ground here in west Michigan. I have heard everything from 1 inch to 10 inches. It's all about the ratings when these news stations hype it up to build viewer numbers....

Ya,it takes a pretty strong wind for us to get lake effect. We're about 25 miles east of 131.

Heck of a lot easier to predict an average trend than a particular spot at a particular time.

Like pouring some cream in a coffee. Mixed up and averaged out it?s easy to see if you need more. When pouring it in while it?s swirling around tough to guess how much is in there.

Your "buts up" comment reminds me of coming back from Ft. Benning, Ga after the daughter"s graduation from paratrooper training, Feb, 2010. Stopped overnight in Murfreesboro, TN in a snow storm. Watching the evening news, the weather lady says the plows were not running that night, so the operators could get a good night"s sleep. Next morning, we find ice/snow covered roads, traffic at 15 mph cuz they let the snow build up and freeze.

Hey Charlie M what part of WNY are you in? I am as well from the same area. I live in Alden. We will see what this supposed storm brings us this weekend.

Plenty of snow here (Edmonton area). Probably typical levels for this time of year. Don't want any of it so come and get it. Temp was -18F this morning. Also not unusual for this time of the year at least it has been generally milder than the hard winter we got last year.

I like driving on hard packed snow MUCH better than trying to negotiate on roads with an inch of salt slush, and 20F temps which happens here. That stuff is like trying to walk across the pig yard after spring thaw. Newer cars and trucks with wide tires just hydroplane on top of that crap and you have very limited control of where your vehicle wants to go.

been plowing snow commercially for 30 years now , I learned the hard way in the blizzard of 78 , the plows are on the tractors and the truck and been working on an old bronco plow truck to put the grandson in it has not snowed here in 2 years ,s e mi. and n w ohio but when old man winter is knockin on the back door you better be ready

They were predicting 25&#176 for us Sunday night.
Would have been first night I had to worry about my water pipes this year.
But now they have revised it to a low of 30&#176.
Still our coldest night so far this year but at least I will not have to worry about the pipes.
