Ford 641 Flooding

I have a 641 tractor that likes to flood when starting. I've used very little choke and it will flood bad enough that gas will run out of the carbonator. It is very difficult to start. when it gets running and warms up it's fine. I checked the float level and cleaned the Crab. and it made no difference in the flooding problem. Any Thoughts? Bob

When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out and fill with fresh oil? Also have you tried to start it with the air cleaner tube off of the carb so as to take the air cleaner out of the problem. Also does it have a rubber tipped float needle and if it does has it been replace no long ago if it has been replace you need to put a set in it to make it work as it should

I installed 12v solenoids to shut off the gas to the carb. The carbs on both my Jubilee and Farmall drip gas when not running. So turn your gas off at tank and let carb run out of gas.
If you don't have a good spark, you may think you have a flooding problem. Replace points, condenser and time engine.

My 861 runs and starts good but cannot more than 1/2 choke for 1 revolution or it will be flooded. Still 6v. it will either start or flood no matter how warm or cold. Carb apart a couple times have improved performance but always has done this. Points and electrical all good, air cleaner clean and free. It does however have rubber needle tip and I believe that may be causing my flooding issues. It's not to bad that I want to tear the carb off again.
If it doesn't start immediately I push the choke off and wait 10 seconds and it does start with little failure.
The 8n is almost as sensitive but a little more forgiving, has rubber tip as well.
I agree with the others weak or mistimed spark and/or partially plugged air cleaner can make us believe we have carb problems.
I plan on replacing needles in the future.

Are you sure it is really flooding?

Dripping a few drops after a failed start is common with an updraft.

If it starts dripping as soon as the fuel is turned on, then it is flooding. Can be caused from trash in the needle/seat, bad needle/seat, partially sunk float, bent float.

The carb will only work as well as the rest of the engine. If it has low compression or weak spark, it will be hard to start with even the best carb.

Bobroberts58 and Grandpa, your tractor is not flooded unless the spark plugs are dripping gasoline. It is perfectly normal for any motor with an updraft carb that does not start after 4-6 rotations, to have gasoline run out of the carb intake as soon as the start button is released. This is because the raw gas that is drawn up out of the float bowl by the suction and is in the manifold is going to be brought right back down by gravity as soon as the suction ends. This is a very common misconception. it is posted about here probably every three weeks.

Please forgive me for calling it flooding, my tractor will however flood very easily if I don't push the choke off in a few revolutions. I am aware of the principles of down draft and how unburnt fuel can return the carb and air intake. Merely stating that in my experience with my tractor it is best to limit the use of the choke as a suggestion to the OP knowing others that don't have regular interaction with these tractors may not be aware how easily they can be over choked. My tractor will flood (Gas dripping from plugs) sometimes when someone less familiar with it tries to start it and instantly chokes it waiting for it to fire like a chainsaw would then to remove choke to get it to run.

I have 2 tractors will start without a choke. As
soon as it fires, it needs some choke to keep
running.
I have other tractors won't fire without a choke.
I have some lawn mowers I leave the cover off
breather so I can spray a squirt of starter fluid on
air filter. Fires right off and needs little to no
choke. Using starter fluid saves starter from
cranking and cranking or it saves me from pulling on
starter rope.

Every engine has it quirks when it comes to
starting.

Thank you all for the advice! I had cleaned and installed a new carb. kit with no change. I will check the oil bath air cleaner and also check the plugs and timing. Again, thank you all for the most helpful comments.
