Screw jacks cost?

Anyone use these heavy jacks. I have two that I purchased several years ago from McMaster-Carr. They are 12 ton size and 10 inches tall. Recently thought about selling them as I don't use them much. Checked current McMaster-Carr price: $ 210.84 That's more that double what I paid for mine.

Why would that cost go so high? I understand price increase, but more than double is crazy!

I just happened to be looking for some 6 months ago. I was surprised them what they were going for.

I have several that I used to jack up bank barns for foundation repair. I bought them 30+ years ago at flea markets for around $20 each.

Don't feel bad,at an auction last summer I saw a railroad jack go for 1200 Cdn, buyer tells me he has a fleet of trucks and needed it for his shop.

Think about what it costs to make them new in low volumes. Hydraulic jacks are cheaper to make and sell in higher quantities.

If you are still looking for some, let me know. I"ll make you a deal, but maybe shipping would make it a no deal. Maybe you live close to southern MN and a road trip might be in order. email is included.

As a shot in the dark I’m guessing liability might be part of the higher price. We all know how to use a jack safely but sometimes something can slip and go flying or go dropping sideways and down.

Wish I could get that amount out of a jack I have.It came from the B & O railroad here in Ohio. Uncle got it when he was working as a brakeman on the trains, mostly in the switch yard, probably over 50 years ago.

I purchased a pair about six months ago at a pawn shop for $50 for the set. When You need em they are scarce. When you don't, they fall off the shelf.

Hi Ron,

If you find yourself tripping over them I would love to get them out of your way and add to your pocket book. Feel free to call or email me at your convenience.

Thanks! Carl

Yeah, what's "several years ago" in ACTUAL years???

Is it like "last ran 8 years ago?" Roughly translated that means it was last run during Bush 41's Presidency.

Time tends to pass faster than we realize.

Prices of most small things has doubled in the past 10 years, long before the tariffs.

Yup, price of screws and nails went up 3x long before Old Orange Hair even thought of running. But I suppose that's his fault too!

About a year ago, we hired a couple Amish lads to do some repair work on an old barn. Among other things, some of the sills were rotted out, and that required jacking up the barn to get the weight off.

First thing I did was round up the old barn jacks, which hadn't been used in years, so were rusted up. They looked at those and at me and kinda blinked......as if to say..."what are you thinking"? One told me they had never seen one before.

I then showed em the hydraulic jacks and their mood brightened considerably. They grabbed onto those in a heartbeat. They went to work and the barn went airborne like it wanted to.
