Is it possible to have someone/thing access your computer while you are on it? I've left my computer on and returned to find stuff I never called up on the screen/history. Then the computer slows down. Only thing that seems to get rid of it is using Ccleaner and wiping all the coolies/history,etc. but there are still things showing that I can't seen to get rid of. Alarmingly, some have a .ru in the address. It's not like it happens constantly, but enough to make me wonder.

Yes, have you ever seen tech support folks access computers remotely? Usually the permission has to he granted for this, however hacker types have ways around this. I dont know any more details about it that that, but yes it is possible

Hello Bret4207,
Yes! Run everything you have to try to clean it. If you know
how, try reverting the computer to an earlier date. Always
shut it off, virus get get rooted bad if you leave it on.
Get a different antivirus program, many free ones work well.

Guido.

Very possible, even likely. You have a bot or a worm. You've downloaded a small program, most likely a batch file, that will allow a remote terminal to take control of your system.

At this point, get professional help. That does NOT mean Geek Squad. Ask around, take it to a private home IT guy. He will charge you a fee, restore your OS, and try to save as much of your personal files as he can. If you have personal info on your system, consider it compromised now. Sorry...

(quoted from post at 14:46:45 01/15/19) Well that problem is one good thing about being on dial up if your not on line they cannot hack your system

I'm sorry to disabuse you, but your system is just as vulnerable as anyone with a DSL or other network/router attached system. In some cases, you may be more vulnerable if you are using an off the shelf modem, and have not taken steps to harden it against intrusion.

Download a copy of Malwarebytes and run the program.

These days, you could have picked up something bad via email, downloading a program, or even [b:9c4c907fa9]simply by visiting a website[/b:9c4c907fa9]!

So I have to ask what are your thoughts or why NOT Geek Squad, I have found them very good help at a reasonable price.

Just one man's opinion. I have never used them because I never will need them. I have heard conclusive reports that they have downloaded, and taken personal photos and videos from customers computers. They also seem to have a 'one size fits all' approach to resolving problems.

Did malwarebytes and it says I'm clean. I'm sure it's off some site I visited, maybe even You Tube or links to foreign parts sites. My own fault I suppose.

I;m also puzzled because programs I've removed (Google Chrome, Skype, etc) keep showing up. I'm seriously considering getting a laptop with Linux on it because windows just seems to attract problems. I've tried loading Linux on this one but I think the version I have is either too old or my Windows system is fighting it.

What browser are you using?

So far Firefox has worked well for me.

Thats one good thing about running Linux. I never have to worry about any of that stuff anymore. It just doenst happen with Linux. I never have to reboot for problems. I dont run anti-virus. It just works period.

first of all if your computer is on then its most likely receiving data. make sure your computer is set up to disconnect from the online. a lot of computers are set up to automatically hook up to the internet when your computer is turned on and will not disconnect unless you do so manually or shut the computer off. I noticed the other day there was a re-install windows 10 on my windows program. never had seen that before and my computer had been acting weird for awhile so I did a complete re-install of my windows 10 through my windows program. I use windows virus program. then ran the file organizer program called defrag. then ran a full virus check. it seems to be a lot better now. I get a lot of notices from windows security is has blocked things trying to get to my memory. you may not know but I believe windows can get into your computer any time you are on line. after all its there program.

When I was working, the company blocked you tube from all company computers because of serious viruses that had been introduced into the company network.

If that .ru is after the .com/.net etc it indicates the country code. .ru is russia!

Like this: ebay.com.au will take to to the Australian Ebay site. .ca gets you to Canada, etc.

Firefox, but even though I use Firefox exclusively when I go to clean it with Ccleaner it finds stuff on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, MS Edge and some other programs I've disabled and even removed (Chrome) several times. Seems no matter what I do Google keeps coming up in things even though I've removed everything related to Google I can find.

I'm running Avast Free AV, but am considering going back to AVG free AV because Avast is constantly trying o sell me upgrades.

One more question for you Bret. Is your Firefox (or ANY other program, including Windows) set to auto-update? If so, there's your problem.

It has gotten to the point where many decent programs add in additional software, which is called bloatware. I used to be on "extremely" limited internet, and software kept updating every time I'd log online. It would slow my connection to a crawl....and that was just Windows. Took a while, but I finally found every single program that auto-updates and disabled that feature. Haven't had problems for a very long time.

Another little program I can't recommend enough is [u:1d730ed84b]uBlock Origin[/u:1d730ed84b]. That little gem will stop LOTS of bad/unwanted software from getting onto your PC in the first place.

Another option to check is, look in Firefox Menu, then Options. Go through all of the Options and remove anything related to Google. I like to use DuckDuckGo for my web browser and have all others deleted. If Google is still listed in your Firefox, then Firefox will continue reinstalling it....[i:1d730ed84b]until[/i:1d730ed84b] you tell it NO!

Bret, what operating system are you using ?
Windows 7? Windows 10?
what you need to do is look through "add/remove" programs and see what is loaded that doesn't need to be there and uninstall it from there.
CCLeaner and malware bytes are good programs but they will not actually remove some programs.

The "easy" way to fix this issue is to "Nuke it from orbit" which simply means wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS from scratch.
I think your PC is redeemable, it will just take some time.
There are suggestions already listed from out esteemed colleagues here on YT to find a local IT guy that you may know and get some help, that would be your best bet.

i would second this suggestion to find a computer shop that can help you. From what I understand CCleaner is a useless program...better to have Malwarebytes cleaning out what is bad
And also look into installed programs and delete what should not be there.

run the chrome browser in incognito mode on the PC and an Android cell phone. My cell phone browser activity will show up on my pc's browser history. Maybe that is part of your activity.??

I'm still using a $9 tracfone flip phone! No internet on that, but thanks for the idea.

Running that awful Windows 10! I detest it! I was perfectly happy with XP and 7 was fine. That's another big part of why I want to dump Windows. I understad the Linux system is like a Windows system only without the useless, aggravating sales/gaming/shopping crap added. I just want to go to my sites, watch a movie, do my bills- period! I know a geek guy that can probably help me.
