i have a 70cc sthil saw with a 22in. bar and chain on it. maybe safe enough to use a 16in. for smaller work?

We have a 440 Stihl which is about the same saw as yours,we
run an 18? bar but it came with a 16?,i think you?d be fine.

Lots of power for the shorter bar, just have to extend the arms a bit more with the short bar

"maybe" you will need to change the drive sprocket
if the chain pitch is different than the longer bar/chain it has now.
get er done.

I put the shorter bar on mine, got tired of
leaning farther down to cut limbs on the
ground, put the longer bar back on.

The shorter bar is fine you need to do nothing but beside mount it and the correct chain. I stick a 20
on my 90cc 660 now and then just for giggles and I ban cut a truck load of firewood in nothing flat.

Shorter bar will throw off the balance of the saw too. I thought I wanted a 20" bar for my Jonsered which came with a 24". With the 20" bar every time I pick it up by the handle the nose of the saw comes right up at me. Balances perfectly with the 24".

We run 15/16" stihl bars on all our saws even the larger ones. Have some 22/24" bars but they stay on the shelf. We plunge cut bigger trees when felling and find the shorter bar better
for that and limbing in softwoods.

Absolutely. But, as others have said, it changes the balance of the saw. 20" bars balance right for me, but I've been running 20" bars for 40 years.

Nobody ever ran bars much longer that 16 inch where I came from, the big timber was all cut 100 years ago, by hand! I did buy a 20 inch
for my dads old Jonsered 621, because we have some big ash for firewood that's starting to blow down. When our son bought his saw he got
an 18 inch bar. I told him that will allow you to saw farther into the ground. I do find it easier to do an accurate job of falling if
the bar reaches all the way through the trunk.

If you going to us a 16"bar buy a saw with a 16" bar. My opinion is why wear out a $1,000.00 saw instead
ware out a $400.00 saw and a lighter saw to use.
