John Deere 2640 tractor

Checking the alternator would certainly be on the short list. Along with verifying that the terminals are in good condition and making the best connection possible.

Does the alternator warning light work?

Start by checking the voltage at the batteries with the engine running above idle to verify if the alternator is working.

Should be around 14.5 to 15 Volts.

(Note that some DIGITAL meters get all freaked out by the electrical "noise" the alternator makes and may give "wild" readings.)

If negative ground cables are still attached to the battery box then I'd suggest to relocate them to a starter mounting bolt. I'll 2nd checking battery voltage & starter amperage draw when attempting to start engine.

With the key off, remove the negative/ground post. Place a test light between cable and battery. If it lights up,you have a draw somewhere.Or wait till dark to unhook. you will see the spark then.May be easest to put in a master shutoff switch in the cable if you cant find the draw.Check ignition switch,Ive seen em fail,as well as alternator and regulator

Thanks all. It was the connection to the terminals. All else was good. Really appreciate it.
