Plow question

I've been looking at 3 bottom plows for my Ford 960. What's the difference in the solid vs slotted mold boards? Any advantage either way? Thanks

Slat will pull somewhat easier. Will also wear faster. Slat bottoms will work better in heavier soils than in sandy souls.

Slat is for very sticky soil, sollid is for moldboards that will let the soil slide off and make them a mirrow finnish. Stony soil the slats will catch the stones between the slats. Slats not used in my part of Ohio

(quoted from post at 22:31:24 01/11/19) Leroy I?ve never seen slat bottoms on a plow except in picture books

I have a Dearborn two bottom plow for an 8N Ford on which my late Uncle Joe installed John Deere slat bottoms!

I?ve only seen the slot/slat plows in magazines or pictures of them on the internet, none of those in my region, always wondered myself what kind of soil were they made for

we don't have many slat bottoms up here either. I will say, if you have rocky soil with stones that are well anchored, you will want a plow with trip bottoms, not the solid beams like the plow in the link has.

Years ago a club member had one on a Allis that he took to shows. He passed over 25 years ago and it was sold, don't know what happened to it. Saw a couple of others with busted out slats.

If the rocks are close in size to space between slats they will jamb in there and bigger ones will break the slats off.

Slat bottoms were a “flash in the pan”. Largely not accepted after trial period. I would only want the plow for the novelty.
