I see the NY governor is going to guarantee every worker a paid vacation.I wonder if that includes farmers? In factory job, we did get two weeks paid vacation. If I want a vacation now no one pays me. Maybe I should move to NY. (no too cold) Stan

Yea, that Dick Wad is dam good at making sure his NYC buddies get all the "benefits that they deserve", at the expense of us up-staters. People are leaving up-state in hoards. because of high taxes. He blamed this fact on the weather.

Here is map showing just who elected him. Guess our rural vote doesn't count for much.

There lots of reasons to come to New York - welfare, high taxes, easy abortions, tons of regulations, a dictator for governor, place where illegal aliens are welcome, corruption among state leaders, place where you can vote if you are a felon. We've got it all.

To get free healthcare, education, and sanctuary status all tax free and a free phone you're gonna have to sneak out renounce your citizenship and re enter illegally lol

Are you kidding me?
Blues-
NYC, Long Island, plus Rockland and Westchester counties
Albany
Kingston/Poughkeepsie
Ithaca-small rural county minor surprise this went blue
Syracuse
Buffalo
Rochester
Everything else red. Was there any city of any size that did not vote for Cuomo? Maybe Binghamton??? This is crazy. Are there still dairy farmers going broke in the southern tier counties gazing upon their Pennsylvania neighbors that can at least buy groceries with their shale royalties??

Does that apply to part time employees?

Is there anything stopping self employed people from taking a vacation?

You forgot to mention NY has the highest combined property and income tax burden in the country. We also "enjoy" some of the highest utility rates nationwide. And here upstate even the weather is persistently gloomy about 8 months a year.

I love NY!!

Sms's map is a microcosm of what would happen if the Electoral College were to be abolished and the president were to be elected by pure popular vote. The areas with big populations would control the results at the expense of the less-populated areas.

I guess Oliver and Lisa will have to sell the farm in Hooterville and buy one in New York if that's the case.

Hey you stole my thunder just a little. You are correct and that is why our forefathers created the college. It really scares me what would have happened in 2016 without it. The biggest problem this country has is the government controlled school system. Even the Soviet Union couldn't do a better job teaching the lib dogmas.

i don't live in Illinois but i believe its about the same. Chicago dictates the rest of the state. and Chic is blue blue blue.

from what i understand California actually has red territories but it too is stifled by the cities.

Nothing to do with the subject or NY state. But I sure would like to go on vacation and have it all paid for!!! But I can guarantee the one paying would be in tears, and have much less wealth once I was done, with what I have in mind. Extended trips to Ireland, Hawaii. Spend a month deer hunting on Anacosti island!!!

Paid vacations started as a fringe benefit that employers used to attract and keep good workers. Just like health care. No employer was "required" to provide either one. These days health care is seen as a right. I guess vacations are going to be a right, too. Typical abundant thinking: "I'll give it to you, someone else will pay for it. The new NY congressman, oops congresswoman (name omitted to prevent poof) has an even grander plan. Healthcare, free college, guaranteed jobs...afterall, she won't be paying it. Sweden does it, why can't we? The new America, eh?

Up here in Alberta, all "employees" (at least those having jobs with a company, etc) get vacation or holiday pay, it's legislated by law. Details in the link below but after one year of employment, everyone is entitled to 4% or two weeks of paid holiday starting in year two I think. After four years of that (must be continuous employment with the same company) it jumps up a bit to three weeks. It must have been happening for a long time, the first actual or formal "job" I had with an employer (summer work tearing down buildings) was in the summer of 1961 and at the end of the summer's work, a bit of money was added onto my paycheque and was "holiday pay". I was being paid $1.40 per hour that summer. I remember my dad explaining it to me. He didn't get holiday pay, he was a self-employed door-to-door salesman so really he was sort of working for himself I guess. Never gave it too much thought again until right now reading this post. Some of the details are outlined below in the link ....
Vacation pay in Alberta

Ithaca is home to Cornell , little new York city . And there's not many dairies left in the southern tier .

So your playing the poor me farmer card no paid benefits?? If so you are your own boss and can work as you please.

I get a lot of paid vacation as I work for a small government and get called out after hours at least once a week. Being government they give comp time versus paying overtime. Funny thing is near all my vacation time is spent farming. Go figure

I remember dad saying "grain farmers are unemployed for half the year, we raise livestock to make farming a full time job".

Great point. If presidents were elected by popular vote, six New York counties and two southern California counties would elect all Presidents.

Then you should be scared to death with the results of
The Electorial College in 2016....what a misfit joke and liar!!!

(quoted from post at 18:10:56 01/10/19) So why not move out to some place else?

You have to find someone willing to buy what you have for enough to be able to go someplace else. I've got a decent house, bard, garage, outbuildings on 342 acres of land, about 60 tillable acres, 100 in pasture, the rest woods and swamp. What would that go for anywhere else? $350K? Maybe twice that? If I got an offer for half that I'd jump on it in a second! Among Northern NY's other features are some of the lowest real estate prices anywhere. Been that way for 50 years at least. That's a big part of why we're still here.

And just today I see a story where Cuomo wants to have a law passed to allow abortion up to the moment of birth for any reason whatsoever. Brilliant!

How would higher payroll taxes (social security taxes) pay for vacations? It pays for some retirements, but not vacations for working people.

(quoted from post at 22:10:56 01/10/19) So why not move out to some place else?

Many people do.....It's a shame that it has to come to that.
New York is a beautiful part of our country and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. At 77, I probably don't have a whole lot of time left so I will probably be able to "tough it out" and never have to move.
The upcoming generations may not be so fortunate.
You will notice that as the rural people move out, the people from the urban areas (with lots of money) buy up the land as it becomes available.
Some, but not all, bring their abundant views with them which, more and more makes the line between the reds and blues less distinguishable.

Tell me about it. I bought my farm at $900/acre in '79. Today land is basically $10k and some up around $20k based upon expansion speculation....installation of outer loop traffic corridors.
Sky is the limit. Sooooo glad the County fathers and mothers have old folks in mind when they write tax laws. N. Texas is booming and my county gets like 60 new families per week I think it's
per week....seems about right. Lots of corporates moving centers here and other folks coming for the employment demand.

As stated, lots of folks come from blue states and bring their voting tendencies with them. Texas has a very low tax structure. Wonder how long that will last.

On paid vacation, I decided that when I entered the work force, that was one perk I was to require. Uncle Sugar fixed me right up with 30 days leave per year.....when you had time to use it.
