How many hour are too many?

How many hours are too many when buying a used Diesel engine powered equipment? If all looks good. Minor leaks. Starts easy. Don’t rattle too load. Seems to have power. And will be used mildly in your future.

Some last 2500 hours, some closer to 25000. Depends on the make and
maintenance....10000 hours usually means its close to a rebuild on most ag engines

It is a four cylinder diesel . In a toro lawn mower. 50 hp.
Total unfamiliar with toro.

JL Ray, more information is needed. While Toro used to be a good brand, they are one the brands that has lost its good reputation. Most equipment manufacturers use multiple engine brands. In order to get a meaningful answer you need to give the brand of the motor as well as a rough idea of the year.

You really need to give more information. I would say engine life = f(Manufacturer, Model, Age, Application, Maintenance, Operator). Ha, Ha, Ha, there is the mathematical equation for you, just add coefficients and units. Pretty good before morning coffee.

At that HP I am guessing that is a Yanmar or Kubota or some other Asia Engine. Many of those engines have very good reputations such as Yanmar and Kubota. After that it is Age, Maintenance, and Operator. So I suggest you talk to the owner/operator as much as you can. You have already made some good observations.

Other than the above you got great advice below for the information given.

I've got a Yanmar 38 hp in a skidsteer with around 10,000 hrs on it. I think its starting to get a little tired, but still runs good.

I have another skidsteer with a 60hp Isuzu. I bought it at 2500ish hours with a blown engine. I spent over an hour washing all the dirt out of the radiator, so I'm guessing it didn't like running hot. I replaced it with a used engine with around 4000 hrs on it.

Like the other guys said, I think the overall condition and care of the machine is more important than the hour meter.

How many hour are too many?
