Is it maple syrup time?
I was cutting Asian Honeysuckle yesterday and sap was coming out. We haven't really had much of a winter, temp was 61. This morning 51 and heading to 25 tonight.
When are you going tap your trees? Want some Honeysuckle sap?

Cooked pancakes last night, and "of course" used Loren's wonderful syrup!

Maple Syrup season doesn't start in the NE until usually in March and continues until the end of April. I said "usually" because the weather has been so erratic lately. Sap flow is dependent on factors such as the amount of frost in the ground and depth of snow pack. Typical years the sap starts running when daily temps consistently get into high 30's- 40's, and then drops back well below freezing nights.
Currently here the frost is quite shallow, 12-16" and there is no snow pack. Temp wise this winter has been very bawl. Only a couple of nights where temp approached 0-F. There has been little to no sun during the day and snow came on Nov. 9th and sort of stayed until present. We had up to 14" on the ground in late Nov., but warmer weather settled and melted it. Over night we dropped to 23F and presently it is 34F. Ideal for sap to run, but I haven't drilled any holes and hung buckets on maple trees.
Every year is different and producers just have to be prepared and let mother nature do her thing. Some years are good, some are poor.
