tractor starter

my ford jubilee starter let me down at the worst possible time, thanks to my john deere, im still able to work around here and move snow. now the old ford has never not started, and the starter itself is probably 8 or so years old, so i took it apart, first obvious this was a broken brush spring, if i recollect it must have all 4 brushed in full contact with the armature, or it wont do anything, so i ordered a set of 4, i got to thinking it would be good to clean the guts up and lube the bushings as long as i have apart on my home office desk....my wife hasn't seen this yet...., has anybody testes the armature? with a multi meter, for continuity? it looks fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check everything out and make sure the broken spring is the only problem, the brushes themselves are probably 75% good

didnt make what i wanted clear, i blame this on age, and crs, but how do i test the armature?

Armatures on starters will appear to be entirely connected from commutator bar to bar. very little resistance, .01 ohm or so. but the commutator should be insulated from the laminations and shaft. The first answer is not informative because a tool called a growler is used to assess actual shorts within the assembly. It is a tool that uses AC electricity to generate a strong alternating magnetic field that puts each winding in action and shows up inter winding shorts and shorts to the iron that an ohm meter will not. You can kinda/sorta check the armature with an ohm meter.

Should have continuity between all the segments of the commutator, and open between the commutator and the shaft. Also look at the color of the segments, all should be the same color and height. Look for evidence of hot connections or slung solder.

Commutator is just a continuity test. The armature requires a growler to test. Not to awful expensive on fleabay.

Look for evidence of the armature rubbing and shorting out on the field coils. Since you have it apart, press the bushing out and turn them180 degrees. If you have a lathe, make new bushings, but it's not necessary because the shaft only rides against one side. The back bushing doesn't wear much.

Most likely the broken spring is all of your problems. Any generator starter shop will have a growler and the test takes about 30 seconds.
