I've had the Wrangler for few years and its been trouble free other than Hyd. pump drive and adding anti-freeze because of a head gasket (which is why I ended up with it). I did a band-aid fix because wasn't sure how long it was gona last. I bought it from my work place and I'm sure everyone and their brother beat the tar out of it. Anyway its time to put some money into it, I rely on it way to much to go without and to look for a newer one is out of the question because of the price they fetch.

Does anyone know how to figure out what model it is? Also what breed is the engine? When I got it, it came with papers that had recent repairs and part numbers and what the engine was I remember it said Perkins but don't remember what size. Of course I can't find these papers. I've also found that these older ones ran John Deere engines?

Parts I'm in need of are a water pump and head gasket. Hopefully the head didn't crack again. I've tried doing google search but next to nothing comes up for these machines. I tried dealer once but without model number they couldn't come up with much and only stuff they could come up with was newer models like 4500.

I work on them for a friend that runs a fertilizer business. Yours is not the oldest as it does not have a tapered hood/counter weight, 1965-mid to late 1970s. The next thing to tell about is if it has a Hi-Lo lever under the dash. These would be the next generation. Made from around 1980- to around 1990. Then the Orange single speed ones where made between 1990- early 2000s when the Yellow 4500 came out. What generation of Orange wrangler you have does not make much difference as far as engines. They all had JD four cylinder diesel engines or Ford industrial gas motors.

Now the bad news in two ways.

1) When Agco bought Willmar the knowledge of these older Wranglers fell to about zero. The parts books just do not show the differences on the orange one very well. The Computer parts lists are just about useless on the older Willmar stuff. We have some of the old paper parts catalogs and Davis Equipment at Des Moines/Johnston IA, has older fellows in the parts and service departments that KNOW a fair amount about the older machines. A lot of the parts are written in their old paper books.

2) Your Wrangler has had the motor replaced. It is NOT a JD diesel motor. Repowers were not uncommon. It does look like it could be a Ford diesel motor. There was a fellow in Western Iowa that transplanted Isuzu motors in them and they were blue too.

So your going to have to get some numbers off the motor. If your lucky a tag/serial number but if not post some casting numbers.

Did some digging found a stamped number HA00305N40746H which is a 1981 USA built Perkins 4.165. Also found a Perkins dealer in Hugo, MN that claims they specialize in hard to find Perkins parts.

Ya I had some trouble with Agco when I needed a new rim. Had to do some digging on my own to find that a rim for a 4500 was the same so then it was no problem found what I needed and had it shipped to the Cat construction dealer in Mankato.

This one does have the Hi-Lo lever under the dash. Sure does cruise in Hi but it stays in Lo 98% of the time because I think the hydro is getting tired?
