Larry,
We had one in our sights, we bought a 4320 and used it to cut silage and tillage. I still would love to run one but
I have a bunch more on my bucket list. I wish there was a "Bucket List" Farm for us "wannabes" Dsmythe

I have had a few on my sales lot. I never had any problem in getting them sold as they did perform well. All of the ones that I had were cab models. Put in your ear plugs before heading out to do your field work as those cabs just amplified the engine roar.

Well, Larry, for 3 grand you could own the one for sale in the photo ads on site.
Lotta blue paint to disguise it as a Ford, and even then you might not fool
everyone,lol!

I had one for 10-15 years. If they are left factory they where not that much of a Horse. Factory stock my IH 1466 that is factory stock would walk away from it. I then put a turbo and intercooler on it. Tuned the injection pump up and then it would walk the dog. Pulled a 25 foot JD 235 disk with cone blades at 6.5 MPH. You could knock out 15 acres an hour. That seemed like you where flying.

Now the JD 8330 pulling a 47 ft. finisher knocks out 40 acres an hour.

The JD 5020 was a brute. Even the JD 6030 that replaced it was rude and crude on the operator. You knew you had been doing some thing if you ran it all day.

Ran 5020 for the neighbor for 3 summers. 24 ft. field cultivator, 4th gear, sometimes 5th,
Could do 10 acres an hour.
Had big Meade cab. NOISEY!!! but sure ran good.

Ran one packing silage years ago that belonged to my uncle. They were a horse but a pretty clumsy one.It had a cab too,and at the end of the day you were glad to part company.

I have restored 5020. Was the 1st jd on the
farm when i brought it 10 yrs ago. Doesnt
see much work at its to big for light jobs
and hydraulics not good enough for power
hungry hyd moters. Dont know why but i
always wonted one. Was never any around
here that i know of but this one came up
for sale in a collection so i brought
myself a 21st birthday present and then the
disease started lol. Now i have 7 mix of
international and jd. The 5020 always draws
a crowd at our local show

I spent hundreds of hours in my youth tilling summer fallow with a 5010. I always liked that tractor, but I blame it on most of my hearing loss today.

Had a 5010 40 years ago with a Egging cab-one of the reasons I can't here today' Bought another at farm sale last year-got it running-now it just sits their-pull a 6030 and son pulls 5020.

The 5010 I bought last year and the 6030 I pull

I spent a lot of hours in a 5020 and they?re loud drug a 5 shank ripper with it all over these clay hills in 3 rd gear I wore ear muffs in it and our 4320 becuse they were so loud .

JD Seller, i very seldom ever find a reason to disagree with you, but comparing a 1466 to a 5020 in factory forms isnt exactly equal is it?

I mean the 1466 came out as the 5020 was wrapping up production so the advantage goes to IH on that, plus it was a 130 ish hp, turbo'ed tractor, the 5020 was barely breaking 110 hp and weighed more than the IH by a couple thousand pounds. By all rights the 1466 should have walked away from the 5020 lol

But i can get behind you when you say throw a turbo on, intercool it, and turn the pump up a bit then yea, game on, because i am getting to do those very things to one of my 5020's as well as a couple other little things for an added bonus, just for fun.

I still do really like them ol 5020's...

(quoted from post at 22:32:59 12/30/18 ) . A 5020 with the late 619 out of a forage harvester with the updated oil pump drive would be good .

Did the 531 ever come out with the oil pump drive update you talk about or did that come out during the 619 production?

and what exactly is the oil pump drive update?

(quoted from post at 00:01:58 12/31/18) 5020 was 141 pto horsepower and 121 drawbar

Against the 1466, Nebraska tests 145 PTO and 123.

Neighbor, hobby farmer, has a 5020 as his primary tillage tractor. He raises grain on about 100 acres tillable. Don't take long for him to do his tillage.

SVcummins,

one of the best things about the Deere forum is the ideas and posts, makes me go look up stuff and see. Plus it doesnt seem like everybody is as mad as they are on the Tractortalk and tales HAHAH!

When i was growing up we had a 5010 standard, loved that ol beast. I now have a couple 5020 row crops, so i was basing my thought process on when i was 15.

That said, i looked and lo and behold the 5020 is a more of a tractor than i expected, according to Nebraska Tractor Test #1025.

what i also learned was that the 1466 went through a change midway through production, the early test was #1080, the second test was #1125.

my buddy is a dyed in the wool red guy and he has a 1466 cabbed tractor, pretty nice machine, but hes never mentioned that it got a horsepower bump mid way through. Im gonna have to ask him about that tonight.

This has been an interesting thread, sure have enjoyed it!
