My First Tractor Pull

Not a participant but it was the first one I had ever attended. July 3, 1988. All vintage tractors. It was such a hot and dry summer that they could not keep the dust down on the dirt track. I recorded quite a bit of the action on the big old VHS camcorder. I've got this bit transferred to digital showing the biggest tractor there. An Oliver 990. The sound of that GM diesel was incredible.

I have noticed that all owners of tractors with Detroit's in them seek attention. They drive around in low gear at tractor shows and parades with the engine at full throttle. Their just as bad as the IH guys with chrome pipes on their 1066.
Personally I prefer a nice well muffled deep throated sound of a big engine idling along.

Those old Detroits will carbon up the ports in the sleeves if they run at idle for long periods. So if they keep them wound up they don't have that problem. Besides you're supposed to drive Detroit like you're mad at it.

(quoted from post at 18:03:11 12/26/18) Was there any reason that those GM Diesel engine couldn?t be muffled down?
This one in the video appeared to have the chrome straight pipe on it. Seems that people like to make noise at tractor pulls to sound more impressive. Its ok for a short run down the track but no way would I want to listen to a straight pipe all day in the field.

Heeeeey!--There are two types of people-Ones that have Detroits and ones that wish they had them. But they just came out with a kit that converts them to gas to quiet them down!---Tee

My S-99 with LOUD chrome pipe that makes a lot of noise and goes slow.

(quoted from post at 18:35:57 12/26/18) They still make a horrible whine with a muffler on them!
I remember a neighbour used to farm with a big Cockshutt 1950 or bigger and that sounded pretty loud from a mile away. Always knew when he was out in the field. That Detroit 2 stroke.

Olivers with Detroits are meant to be heard...I would be booed off the track if I had a muffler on it....I haven't
pulled mine in 5 years but I've got a guy begging to pull it again.....Everyone either loves them or hates them..
This was at Carthage,MO in 2010...The pull got rained out on Sat evening and it was 105 when we pulled on
Sunday afternoon..

You need to make it 3 types of people to include us that you could not give us one if we had to do something with it other than haul it to the scrap yard and I am not talking about a parts yard either. That goes for any and all diesels. I despise all of them.

Despise diesels? I can't imagine why. Its about all I use now. I'll take the old gas Cockshutt 50 out to run the hammer mill once in a while now but for everything else around the yard its the Super 90 diesel or the 2140 JD with that efficient little turbo diesel engine. Gas powered engines are truly only for yesterday's tractors.

100% agree straight pipes are what so many seem to want at the pulls but out in a field all day NO WAY!!!!

NOW-NOW--Detroit 2 cycle--Way ahead of their time!!!---Tee

So simple you could train a deaf monkey to run one!

The old 2 cycle Detroit's are loud, even with good mufflers, probably 40% of the noise or more came from the engine and supercharger.
I prefer a Cummins over a 2 cycle Detroit but in it's day I don't know of another mfg that could make over 100 hp with only a 212 ci engine.
Always wanted a 1950 Oliver with a 4-53 Detroit but wouldn't want to run one all day everyday.
