Stump Removal

Short of a backhoe or a dozer give us your stump removal technique.

Got a 24+ inch eastern black oak stump burning in the yard right now.
I cut a X down from the top of the stump to ground level.
Then at the center of the X I plunged cut 4 little triangles.
I then built a fire on top of the stump center.
Over night the 4 wedges burnt out so now I have about a 6 inch hole in the center.
Every now and then I clean out the hole and start the fire over.
Its a slow process but seems to be working.
A good stiff wind or a fan would sure help.

Wish I knew someone with a saw mill.
Center 18 inches or so of the trunk is a nice red color and got to be 15 to 20 feet long.

Me? I use a backhoe. My BIL just builds a fire on a stump. Might have to burning a couple of times.

If you can get coal keep throwing it on as the stump burns down. Charcoal works to but not as goog as coal.

Goodness sakes go look on U'TUBE. There are all kinds of ways and all you need to do is try a couple of them. I did the charcoal with a little blower fan from a piece of cooking equipment. Had a 4 inch water heater metal pipe stuck down the side inside a 55 gallon drum. Cooked it like a blast furnace.

Well you probably know this but a stump grinder they do have small portable ones, rental ones and people do it for hire.

I have used charcoal but it take a lot of it. Lately I have hired guys who grind stumps. Expensive but about the only way to go. Good luck.

If not in a big hurry-I use table salt! I drill as many 4 inch deep, 1/4" holes in the top of the stump as my heart desires, then pour the salt in! First time I tried it within 6 months it was below ground so I added dirt(was in my MILs back yard)! It just kept going and going! I added dirt 3 more springs after as the earth just kept moving as it rotted! I figure the removal cost my $.25!

I burnt out 3 Box elder (female) and 1 pine stump this fall. Seemed to work better by chainsawing "X"s down to the ground, and even sawing lower in the middles. Had to keep messing with the fires for 2-3 days each. All 4 now are filled in with grass seed planted on top of the bare ground where the stumps used to be. I have 3 more to do this summer, next fall. Stump grinders can drive out of your yard with over a $1000 bill in their pocket.

I had a grinder come out last year for about 20 stumps.....3 were grown together, the rest were generally over a foot in dia...cost me $600.

Put a barrel over the trunk for a chimney, and drill angled holes
from ground level down a foot or so into the middle of the stump
for a draft.

I feel lucky to know a man with a sawmill who will pick up my yard tree logs and give me some of the wood he cuts.

Also have a neighbor with a 75 hp stump grinder. He makes short work grinding stumps.

This is the hole in the ground after he ground a 3 ft stump.

Didn't take him any time to grind 6 stumps for me.

Your very lucky (or the guy is a fool) as most refuse to saw yard trees at all.
If they do they will only do it if you agree to buy a new blade every time they hit a nail.

I normally flag them and just let them rot away on their own. If it's not someplace you are plowing a stump grinder is an easy fix. Any tool rental place would have them.

A couple of months ago I cut two big (about 24" on the butt) trees next to my driveway. I had a guy come with a good sized stump grinder and he ground them slightly under the dirt. $140.00 for the two. I thought that was good, although I did not ask any others for a price.

I read where buttermilk would do the same thing.
