Its a little out of season here in December but I happened on this old photo from about 1989 of me and the Massey Ferguson 510. I was picking up a swath of fall rye. Not sure but I think it was cut by the 21 foot pull type swather so it was a good sized swath as the picture shows.

That does look like a hefty swath. We had a pair of 510s. First one was bought in 1964 and the 2nd around 1976. It was the 2nd one that gave us grief and caused us to trade both off for a 760. Huge step up for us. It could cut as much as both 510s and on half the fuel. But that is only when it wasn't broke down. We still have a 1978 diesel 510 a neighbor pawned off on us.

This 510 was a good one. Western Special, 1976 model. It gave less trouble than the 550 that replaced it. The best thing about the 550 was the economical Perkins 354 diesel. But nothing wrong with the Chevy 350 in the old 510 either. It just cost a little more for fuel per day compared to the Perkins in the 550.

Our 2nd one was a Western Special too. Funny you mention the 350 because that is what gave us the problems. Never did run right the few years we had it. In fact, when the mechanic was out to try and fix it, it got to the point that he started switching parts between our Chevy pickup we had sitting there and the combine engine. Actually got it running right and soon as he took off down the road it started missing again. That night both were driven to our Massey dealer in Canada and we brought home the 760. Another thing is the AC compressor just shook the whole combine every time it came on.

I'll bet your miss was the same problem we had with this GM 350 in the 510. It only showed up at slow idle. Turned out to be a hairline crack in one of the hydraulic lifters. We replaced it and the combine ran just fine for as long as we had it. I know I have posted videos of it here before but in case anybody missed, here is one from 1988.

I just combined some corn on Thursday with my 510. I hadn't used it for several years, so it was after lunch before I had it ready to go. I would have gotten more done, but I buried it in the mud and had to wait for a tow out backwards. this year will be a good one to forget.

Our neighbor bought a 510 new in the 70?s. They ran it every year up till a few years ago. They were quite capable machines back in their day.
