rear rim repair

have a hole rusted through on a john deere A. thinking about putting in a repair piece and then moving the valve stem hole, the question i have is, has anyone moved the anti spin blocks and how did you reattach them. i see they are riveted on now. can the rivets be obtained anymore.

Why not just re-drill the repair piece for your valve stem. Heat and flatten the area like original and drill.

Don't know how bad your's is ? but I have sandblasted rims and welded up holes in them before with ease with a mig welder. You can hold a large chunk of brass behind it to aid in keeping the weld from felling through.

I have a welding shop that has fixed several bad rims. He cuts a section out and then cuts another section from a junk rim and welds it in place. He will do some real bad ones as long as he does not have to cut the outside bead of the rim. Clean it up and paint it and it hardly shows. Not all shops will do this as many are concerned about liability if one would fail when mounting up a tire. Tom

Local tire shop, one of 77 shops owned by same company in 10 midwestern states says they won't touch ANY rim that has been weld repaired in any way. Car, truck, tractor, lawn mower, wheelbarrow.

I'm looking to splice in an extra 2-3 inches into the rims on my Farmall M. Found a tire shop with their own rim shop that will probably get the job.

I repaired the hold in a rim by welding a heavy washer in. I don't have a MIG so I used oxy-flame and steel rods. Then drilled the washer out for the stem. Worked OK but the tractor doesn't get hard use. I have to get after the rims on my A too.

On my Super M I cut a piece out of a junk rim, then cut the bead off and used the other piece to trace the hole I wanted to cut out of the rim I was saving leaving the bead intact. Mig welded the piece in, drilled the new valve stem on the other side 180 degrees off.

That chain of shops probably had an accident from a repair made by Bubba in his kitchen soldering in a patch. I don't blame the shops it's probably their insurance co decision. I would trust my work 100%. Just don't know about the other guy. I've seen some pretty scary welds in the past on items I have bought. Stan

Is the rim rusty around the anti-spin blocks?

There is no reason to move them if the rim is solid where they are mounted. They have no special relationship to the location of the valve stem.

If you need to move them it's just a matter of grinding off the old rivets, drilling new holes, getting some new rivets, and peening them properly.

Those rims used to cost me $35.00 each at salvage lots. Not worth the bother to mess around with fixing them. That was 15 + years ago. I replaced a lot of them over the years I owned my tire shop.

I have repaired about 5 rear rims buy getting a patch welded in. Patch cut from another junk rim. Rust holes are always at the tube stem hole so I drill a new 5/8? hole. Works great
