Dealing with an insurance company issue?

This comes up every so often. Auto insurance quotes you a price like $700 for year you sign up and PAY IT IN FULL. Then you get a notice that they have to up your rate say another $300 to $1000. Local lady had this happen and threatened to sue and bring in insurance board etc. Also told the agent (a local outfit) she would sue them also. GUESS WHAT THEY NEEDED "SOME PAPERS" AND IT WENT AWAY QUICK!!! I find this to strange. Also think We Fleece EM and Good law firm would have a case. Your thoughts

My insurance company agent told me auto plans are only ever quoted in 6 month terms because of the rates changing so much. I could not get a yearly one.

Yep, 6 months at a time- and once you pay the premium, they can't raise it during that period. Binding contract, etc. And they can't cancel you, either- they tried to do that when our son had an accident (just wanted to cancel him, not us). Told them that we weren't taking him off our insurance, and that was that. We found other insurance when it was time to renew.

One of the darn few things I recall from studying insurance law wayyyyyyyyyyy back in law school was its pretty much governed by good old fashion well settled LAW OF CONTRACTS which is almost as old as property law......If you have a contract stating you get x coverage for x time period that's binding but ONLY until the time expires at which time sure things can change and you can then choose to agree or not.

JT,
Tell State Farm if they have a contract they can't cancel it. Without even an explanation, State Farm canceled my business insurance after just 3 months. I even told my agent I wouldn't switch to State Farm unless they will cover my commercial garage. Oh no problem. This was shortly after 911. 911 caused commercial rates to double. I have no love for State Farm.

Good afternoon neighbor George, FYI It don't mater if its State Farm or the John T Insurance lol. A valid contract is enforceable at law and if one party doesn't honor it they have breached PERIOD and a court of law can issue an order NO PROBLEM its a slam dunk.

HOWEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR that don't mean the John T or State Farm insurance wont still breach and its up to the injured party to go to Court to get satisfaction.

Don't confuse what the law says and can do with what parties may still try and maybe even get by with grrrrrrrrrrr

State Farm (like anyone) can be sued for breach of contract...

JT,
Suing never crossed my mind, I was more concerned about finding an agent to insure me with such a short notice.

Did I mention how much I love State Farm. I've never been on a jury either after I tell them how much I love insurance companies.

Allstate put it to me once following an accident she was in. The other guy had Allstate.

I learned how much Farm Bureau doesn't pay on a hail damage to roofs. No longer with Farm Bureau. Stop knocking on wood. Ask your Indiana Farm Bureau agent how much they will pay on 20 year old shingles? Then post your answer.

Once years ago I was successful in a jury trial against Walmart, but in preparation I learned a great deal. A whole room full of seasoned attorneys informed me State Farm and Allstate were champions when it came to NOT paying claims lol

i had that happen to me too after i paid a year for insurance, now this was for a heavy truck, i paid the first increase i was busy with the truck, and didn't have time to fool with a insurance company, the second time they pulled it was about 4 months later, and they wanted nearly double what i had already paid, i told them no, and that they could return the unused amount of yearly premium , or my attorney was more than willing to haul them into court and sue them for many times that amount, they paid up, i got some back, not what i had hoped for, but some, after the phone call i called a different agent with a different company who was more than happy to insure me, never another problem, my take on it is dump them, this probably wont be the last time they ask you for more money

JT,
I don't have a law degree, but I could have told you Allstate and State Farms are on the top of my list too.

I did work for 100s of insurance company's over 44 years of doing body work. The absolute worst was Progressive, before they came into existence it was Allstate. The best to deal with were Farm Bureau and State Farm but both were a little tight to deal with although fair. State Farm replaced my roof a few years back, the old shingles were going bad before the hail, no problem 100% coverage minus deductible. Damaged fender on new JD tractor, stopped in ask State Farm agent what deductible was he you don't have any, have JD dealer fix it. I still have Farm Bureau insurance also.

I spent 11 years dealing with insurance company's. Some of the best I dealt with- Farm Bureau, Progressive, Hartford. Easy to deal with. Worst were General and Allstate.
