How should a diesel exhaust look at startup?

When you start up a diesel tractor, does the color of the exhaust indicate the condition of the engine and if there are problems?

I don?t consider blue smoke to be a good thing, indicates oil, most older engines will have some coal black smoke at first start up. Black is just fuel burning but should only be noticeable at first start up or if the engine is under s lugging work load. Newer tier 4 engines don?t really smoke noticeably at all if they?re working right.

If it's below freezing, some may emit a light blue or white smoke til they warm up. A warm diesel should not smoke at all once the idle speed is reached. And like Philip said, some newer ones hardly smoke at all.

Depends on the vintage of the tractor

Newer ones not much

In the 70?s had one that when cold would caugh and spit out white smoke for a few minutes and then clear up with almost no smoke. Did this from factory new to when sold. Nothing wrong with the motor

Farmer down the road had an older IH 806 and you could see the black smoke a mile away when he worked it really hard

At start up when cold some white or white blue smiike probably ok - just in burned diesel. If you see blue smoke after it?s warm probably time to rebuild

White smoke is normal right after start well above freezing. Black smoke is normal from older tractors after they get warmed up and are working and getting plenty of fuel. Blue smoke indicates excessive oil consumption.

Depends on the engine condition, and what type injection system the engine has. Some with excess fuel and/or retard start timing may smoke heavy during starting, but not under full load. Some turbocharged engines will smoke black under heavy acceleration, and some won't if an aneroid is fitted that's working right.

The ol 98 dodge if it?s 18 degrees and I don?t let the grid heater warm up first shoots white blue gray smoke until it ketches it breath sounds a lot like a John Deere 50 series starting when I do that to

I should also Add the 98 service truck runs a 10,000 mile oil change interval and uses less than a quart of oil in that time
