Engine block

Want to clear the air, I have been doing research for an engine block for my friend 4020 diesel.
If you go to jd parts and look at the early model engine block on parts list it give you all the casting numbers for the Diesel engines his is r40890 however jd showed on their website that they offer a reman engine but the casting number is R40930 if I look that block up it doesn?t have weep holes and looks like a newer style block. If jd parts schematic shows that it will sub over will that block fit. Maybe jd had an updated block from mother Deere to correct their flaws idk. Wanted to ask cause of that the case my friend has the money to go get one.

Also be aware the early and late blocks have a different size injection pump mounting pilot hole. Early used a smaller hole that the pump brass pilot tube centered in, late blocks have a larger hole as the pump housing has a larger flange pilot. If his pump is a DB, it's the early block, late blocks used the CB pump which is replaced by the JDB pump.

Of course It will. But best deal is to find a engine from a combine. 6620 7700 7720 8820. Generally these engines are low hr. And cheap. Plus is can take the turbo off and turn the inline pump down and have a better engine. There is some little things to work around. Oil pan front cover.

There are several different 404 blocks, the rear bolt pattern is the same on all of them,,but there are differences in each of them, injection pump mounting is a primary difference..

Our 4020 is a 67 and It?s original block had the venalator pump and the old style dipstick the block was cracked between every cylinder so I got a new used block from nyssa tractor . It is the newer style no pump and the newer style dipstick it bolted right in the only difference was had to to run a power wire to the new style injection pump instead of having the manual fuel shutoff on the throttle lever

My question is will the r40930 block work for an old version 4020 they show it to be on the list. I?m puzzled as to how all will bolt up I thought newer console tractor engines wouldn?t bolt up right? His casting number is r48090 I think.

I?m sure you had to get a different head for it. Cause of it being a newer style block, or did your head swap over on newer style block. I know at one time i think it was when4020 came out in 64 they have those 25 mm big injectors and they did away with them on the start of 65 year models. But those had a wider head for the older blocks, idk if it would swap vise versa

I got the whole engine with head and injection pump for 1800.00$ and they took the old engine parts back for the core

If it is just the bottom bores where the o-rings ride they can be rebooted and sleeved. Common on IH 414-466

No where have I read where you took actual measurements on both the upper and lower counterbores. As mentioned below good shops can sleeve them. Also have you measured the sleeve protrusion? Deere has shims where those bores can be cut to set the liner to the correct height and when clamped down it will not move.
