Mr Heater / forced air heater problem

Ive got a 210,000 Btu Mr Heater fuel oil forced air heater. When I first start it up now it blows bluish smoke for about 5 or 10 seconds. Some times it will keep blowing the smoke until I shake the unit. I have new hoses on it and the filter in the tank is clean and is running about 8.5 psi on the gauge. The igniter is working but am wondering if the nozzle might have some dirt in it. Any other ideas where to look for the problem?

Take the top off and watch the spray pattern when the heater first starts. If the nozzle is worn or plugged they will not atomize the fuel oil correctly. So the flame does not burn all the fuel. This is worse until the heater warms up and then it will more than likely burn better.

Saying that the "nozzle may have dirt in it" is similar to saying that it has not been serviced in awhile. The blue smoke means that it is pushing fuel for too long before firing up. They need a new nozzle every year, a new filter every year, and the electrodes need to be cleaned and checked for proper spacing. And while you are at it the heat exchanger needs to be cleaned or your heat is going up the flue.

It was serviced last year. It isnt used every day all winter. The electrodes were cleaned and I
checked the spacing. The spark is there before the fuel starts.

Had the cover off. The spray pattern looks to be good. Spark is there immediately.

Alan The spray pattern maybe correct but is the drop let size correct??? When they get worn they do not atomize the fuel into as small of a droplets. So it takes a little longer for the heater to burn the coarser droplets.

Also is the fuel from last year???? If it is replace it with fresh fuel and see what happens. I dump mine every spring and burn it in the tractor barrel. Then I fill then up with fresh K1 in the fall.
