Hi I need help starting my 1958 fordson diesel. Has fresh gas. Will not fire. 28 degrees here. Does front lever have anything to do with starting. It is stuck in gear. Turns over with clutch to floor. any help would be great. Thanks.

Take the four bolts out from around the gear sticks, lift them away, line up the selectors
in neutral, replace sticks and bolts. A common problem on these tractors especially if
force used to shift gears. Bottom of the main gear stick could need building up with weld
and re-shaping.

Non-start could be air in the system, blocked filters and lack of fuel. Really need more
information.

Fordson Dexta is in the top three of misspelled tractor names- Kabota and Alice Chambers are also in the running.

I had a Super Major years ago and I think they are much like the Dexta on the top end of the engine. The lever you described takes away some or all of the compression so the engine can turn over more easily in the cold weather, hopefully making it start better, especially if one person runs the starter and the other uses the compression lever.

the dextra I had was diesel might be one of your problems and like has been said the trans shifters can get locked in two gears at the same time ,remove shifter cover and slide the two shafts back into center postion

After you free up the gears by centering the sliders. Then deal with the fuel system. We don't know your background and how much you know about Dexta tractors. If you don't know anyone who can build up the main shift lever, You can buy a new one as there are a number of places that have them including YT.

1. Did you actually put gasoline in the diesel tank? If you did this you need to completely drain the fuel tank, filter, fuel line and injection pump. Gasoline can completely destroy the engine.

2. If you put diesel in the tank you need to bleed the fuel system. This has to be done in a sequential manner starting at the fuel filter. and ending at the injectors.

3. Which front lever are you talking about? There is an engine speed lever on the right side just under the steering wheel.

It might help if you tell about the history of this tractor. How long have you had it? etc.

turn the key on there is a lever on the right side down low it hard to push but that engages the starter I would just push on it with my foot

Estraub58.

Your tractor is a four cylinder diesel and it is a New major or a power major. The serial number on the left hand side of the bell housing will tell you which one it is. The layout is going to be different than a Dexta. This may change the instructions.

You still need to bleed the fuel system. If it has not been run in 6 years you need to completely drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter.
If you have already done this then bleed the fuel system.

Change the oil and put some oil in the injection pump. Either I or someone else will give follow up help.

I think the lift pump on this model feeds the filter so you need to see of it is working by working the lever under the lift pump and seeing if it will over fill the filter housing by loosening the top bleed nut on the housing.

After you get the lift pump and filter working and purged then bleed the injection pump by loosening the bleed nut on the outer side of the injection pump. This is toward the front of the pump. I don't know if the pump top has a drain, but you need to get any old fuel out of the top reservoir. Pumping the lift pump may suffice, but I am not familiar with this particular Simms injection pump model.

If this all works out loosen the pipe nuts at the top of the injection pump and start the engine until diesel comes out of these pipe nuts. tighten them then loosen the pipe nuts that go to the injectors. Start the engine until diesel comes out of the injector lines, then tighten them.

The lift pump should have a filter on top that may need to be cleaned. Some of these models may also have a second filter underneath the injection pump. These are not the main filter, but serve to remove larger particles and possibly water.

The serial numbers may not be on the bell housing on these tractors. I think you might find them on the right side??

This is important. If it has not been run for 6 years change the coolant and make sure you use a coolant that has anticavitation additive in it to prevent pin holes in the wet liners.

These are direct injection engines and I think are more prone to this effect, but I am not sure if it was a problem in fordsons. Still the additive couldn't hurt.

thanks yes under feul pump is a lever it did pump diesel out top of filter .now ill move to simms bleed them. I parked it because I bew a hose on back hoe impossible to find it is 15 mm England.but its time to get it running and into my garage so I can hopefully work on it

where do I put oil in injector pump and just 30 weight and it does not crank easy if leave on front is up will it start with commpesion off engine

Normally these pumps use leakage from the pump elements to lubricate the cam. Some suggest taping a small plug in the front cover, but make sure it does not interfere internally. Another one says adapt a hose to the drain at bottom and fill holding the flexible hose up. Put the plug back in quickly. It does not take much, but cam may last longer with 30 wt. oil than with diesel fuel. Later pumps have a fill plug in them. See pictures of a Simms minimec injection pump and use what they suggest for lubricant.

I should stop here and say the later Simms injection pumps have mechanical governors which require heavier lubrication than diesel fuel. My Dexta tractors have pneumatic governors, but I think I will eventually convert them oil lubrication. I have not examined them close enough to see if a plug in the cover is the best solution.

Also an area diesel injection pump repair service suggested putting oil in pneumatic governed pumps to make them last longer.

I don't know where you live, but if the metal fittings are okay you should be able to get a parts store or hydraulic shop to crimp or swage on new hoses to your fittings with new ferrules. Even in our modestly sized city of about 70,000 there are at least 5 places I can name off the top of my head to do this.

im in northern Minnesota I’m selling it I give up pass word front is loader 1958 712 backhoe is 1958 Sherman it is a major or super major 4 spd tan when parked

I don't know the physical position of the levers you are asking about. I am not familiar with the major, new major, power major levers.

h I see pictures didn’t post what a compilated site

(quoted from post at 15:29:05 12/02/18) any idea what the two levers do and here is engine casting number

You can buy an operators manual right off Ebay...just sayin'.

thank much I ordered manual on eBay so I shouldn’t have to ask for help but I hope !they can help with levers
