Boston Christmas tree story

All the years I lived in the maritimes (eastern Canada) I never heard of this Christmas tree story. In 1917 a ship loaded with explosives drifted into the Halifax harbour while it was on fire. A mass explosion occurred killing many and injuring hundreds if not thousands and demolished the area close to the harbour. The good people of Boston sent immediate aid to Halifax by way of doctors, volunteers clothing food money and more. The city of Halifax was left with a never ending gratitude to the people of Boston and has for many years sent a giant Christmas tree as a token of their appreciation.

Just to add a bit to your thread there: Last years tree marked the 100th year of the event, that the Halifax Fire Dept responded the report of the shipboard fire at the " Narrows" and were killed during the blast.
The present day Halifax Fire Dept has a Pipes and Drums Band that played at the lighting of the tree in Boston, marking the dept's loss at the time and the event.
I admit it was a "proud" time to see a certain young lady with her bagpipes, as part of the Dept's Band.
As i told her if the dog is howling...your playing them well..:)
