Sitting on the tractor again today and I got thinking 🤔? Is there a difference between say plus fifty or case ih tractor oil versus say shell or valvolene engine oil

Some oil co. Makes for the manufacturer. You think Mobil Shell Valvoline would let their premium oil not be as good.

All of the top spec oils meeting the spec for the latest emission engines, will be pretty similar. The discount stuff may not have as many additives, so you may see a shorter life if you were religious about sampling.

Keep in mind that some OEMs are moving their current oil to synthetic blends and different viscosities than what you are used to.

Come to think of it, I think Plus 50 has been semi synthetic for a while now. Case has just started going that way.

Hey SV - We have a 2002 Peterbuilt with just short of 2 million miles and the transmission or the rear ends have never been apart -- The Cat engine has been overhauled in frame twice -- it has full synthetic oils all around -- makes a believer out a lot of locals -- That truck goes from SW Minn. to Central Miss. most every week and has never let us down -- on its second clutch too -- its a big bunk and yellow as a canary. Turbo Diesel Register did a test of various 15w-40's a few years ago. It was a blind sampling so the initial result interpretations would not be colored by pre-conceived brand preference. IIRC the CJ-4 spec was still fairly new. One of the top five finishers was Wal-Mart Super Tech. However, looking as a whole group there was not a whole lot of difference between the top one and the bottom one. In short, they basically said that modern specifications are becoming so tight that the oils were basically forced into being good in order to legally put that label on there.

Did a little looking and here's part of it. I believe they did and even larger sample test somewhere in there.
