missing tractor driving already

last drove the tractor about a month ago. it's been too rainy and clay muddy to drive without the chance of getting stuck, and I got stuck once and don't want that to happen again. now it's muddy and icy and snowy, so done until next year. kind of miss driving that nice red tractor, working the dirt. so instead, I went to Fleet Farm yesterday and bought another tractor shirt. I bought one in summer and it turned into my very favorite shirt, so I was hoping they had one left so I could have two favorite shirts, and they did! One left in my size. Also bought my first pair of overalls. Carhart with double front leg denim. Every tractor driver should be wearing overalls, right? Wait, that could be a hazard with the shoulder straps. Well, I'm more than careful with the implements, turning off the tractor to hook and unhook. I'm wearing the overalls next year. I'm going to take off those useless arm rests so I don't get hung up on them. And, I have no interest in toys, but had the urge to buy a Farmall 1086 model tractor with a hay wagon, and even had green bales of hay. Haha! $50. No. That urge to buy that passed. Mostly. That was a cute little toy. Was picturing it on the coffe table in the livingroom for the winter. No, no, don't need it. Of course, while at Fleet Farm, had to get a few snacks: Tillamook jerky and a pecan log. And half pecans for making pies soon. I don't get "to town" much to big stores, so that was fun.

Farm Stores are fun. It is always tempting to buy SOMETHING!I wear overals from time to time.Keep the sides buttoned and the straps fastened snugly. There is absolutely no excuse for NOT driving your tractor! lol even if you just drive it around the yard a couple of times,or just down the street. How about entering in your local 'Parade of Lights'?Neighborhood 'hay ride'? There are always reasons/excuses to drive your tractor! Enjoy!

Yes, that is true! There are plenty of ways to use your tractor in the winter. I would like to use it to plow the driveway and keep a maintained ski trail in the fields with a drag, but don't have the set up for that yet. My pretty tractor doesn't do well in the cold weather. Plugged it in last winter and tried to start it and it wouldn't start. I need to go through it and see if I can figure out what needs to be done to get it to start in the cold. That will be fun, too.

Armrests are useless? I really like mine.

it's a IH 666. in north WI. I already posted this picture in a different post, but here it is again!
And SHOWCROP, haha, I know some use armrests, but driving tractor for me is new and so fun, I sit up straight and tall with a big smile on my face, and driving like that, the arm rests are down too low and just get in my way when I'm using the levers down there on the floor to the right for draft and height. More safe for me to just not have them.

forgot the picture!

Been wearing bibs 7 days a week for years! Never thought about them being dangerous! Biggest problem is taking a crap in the field and loosing stuff out of the bib pockets. I never saw my Grandfather in anything except bibs. Don't recall him having a safety problem wearing bibs. Dixie has a pair set aside to bury me in. That and an Oliver hat.

oh, and also, reaching around behind me to use the lever to start and stop the PTO, the rests are in the way. That's just me. I tend to modify all things to best suit me... tractors, T-shirts, brand new truck seats (!), everything.

That is an aftermarket seat. An original OEM seat has the armrests 'built in' to the backrest.Nice looking '6'.

That's good that it's not the original seat, then, because I'd have to cut those built in arms off somehow. These ones just unscrew off or something. All summer I kept meaning to rip 'em off. Did tear off that ugly radio that was mounted on the big fender.

If it will not start with the block heater plugged in it is not working. You should be able to hear it sound like it is starting to boil when you first plug it in. If not it is not working then you need to check your element with an ohms meter for continuity also the cord could be burned off at the end where it goes into the heater.
There's always ways to use drive tractors even if only to get the mail in the snow.

I don't think I heard any noise when I plugged it in. I left it for a couple hours then, and came back and expected to feel a little warmth but didn't. Okay, I'll have to see about getting an ohms meter.

That tractor has the 310 or 312 engine. They will start! Pull the T handle shutoff half way till you feel resistance.Push the button. When it starts, push in the handle.that is a 'fuel dump' for starting. Dumps extra fuel and changes the timing a bit to start.Even noticed when the engine starts to rev when the cable gets pulled out halfway? That means it works.Mine
(706,310 german,13,000 hrs) will start at zero, but will not start at 80 degrees without pulling the cable out halfway.

I took my JD with a flail mower out yesterday, after a month or so from it sitting after my mowing season is over until next spring. I used it to flatten a large area of mulch for our community craft fair. It actually worked out real good at leveling out the clumps. It was nice to be out on the tractor, even for a short time. Stan

deltared, I know I haven't sat on my tractor for over a month, but I can't remember any T-handle shut off thing. Don't know what you mean. There is a button to push, just to the right of the start button. I believe that is to aid in starting if needed. book might have said it was ether pumper???? I'd have to look at book and see what it said it does. I can't remember any t-handle anywhere. I'll be outside soon, and will go look.

I still don't know what you're talking about. Is this handle somewhere you can reach while sitting in the seat? or somewhere while standing on the ground? I'm looking at my book and see the gas tractors have a choke control on the dash. mine doesn't as it's diesel.

I am reading that to start when it is below freezing, you need to push the ether button while you are pushing the start button and it is cranking. Probably empty of ether in there. I still need to look into the plug-in not working.

That tractor doesn't have the cable shut off like the smaller models. It shuts off with the throttle lever like the bigger tractors. It will have the 312, american diesel in it. The 686 had both the 312 and 310 engines. The 686 had the 312 the first 2 yrs of production and the 310 German the last 2 yrs. I have had several, have a 686 now with the 310.

MikeinKy, okay thanks for clearing that up. like you said, mine has a throttle lever behind steering wheel. I didn't know anything about any cable levers!

His tractor has the American 312 engine, not the German IH Neuss 310, so there's no Tee handle on the fuel stop. What IS needed for starting is NEVER start at idle throttle position, but with 1/3 or more throttle. American Bosch M100 pumps have an excess fuel cylinder that ONLY works with throttle lever at 1/3 or more. When the engine starts the cylinder moves the fuel stop plate to the less fuel, run position by engine oil pressure. If engine is getting tired, it still will need help. Last tractor drive I was on in Wisconsin in October, a fellow with the same tractor plugged his in so it would start Saturday at 28 degrees. His engine was getting worn enough it didn't start well cold though.

dieseltech, good info, thanks. didn't know about the 1/3 rule. and I'm a she not a he :) but you can call me flower if you want to... who said that? I think it was the skunk in Bambi.

gotmyfarm! - Get the Model Tractor, but get one that's "Remote Controlled", then you can "drive it" all around inside the house. LOL

haha! didn't see a remote controlled one but I'm sure they make them! Well, now I'm curious to see if I can get it fixed to start in the real cold days below zero. I need a new can of ether I'm sure (I took off panel to get in there to take it out and test it if it's empty and it is so so old looking and welded on there with age so need to go out with some other tools to try again to get it out) and I looked at took off the heater cord and it looked very good. Also found a HUGE nest in a large open area above and beside ether can going all the way across to the muffler area. Lucky I didn't have a fire last summer! shredded paper towels, hay, hair, etc. That red squirrel is long gone. I cleaned it all out and won't be having that problem again, now that I got a super hunter cat. This cat even brings home grouse!

I wear bibs all the time, as my Dad and Grandpa did. Never a problem until last week--pant leg caught on something when dismounting from tractor, took quite a spill (for an 83 year old) but no permanent damage done. Just a little 'road rash" on my left knee. And a tear in my bibs!

Buy the model we call them models because grown
men don?t play with toys or at least we don?t want
people to know we do

oh no, glad you didn't get hurt more seriously. I like to wear knee high, smooth rubber boots with no laces or buckles or anything and tuck my pant legs into them so there is no chance of catching on anything.

Flower, FYI, it sounds from your description of the ether can that your 666 is equipped with cold start system that takes an ether cartridge as opposed to a can like you would get at the auto supply store. They are more like a propane cylinder. An international truck with C-15 Caterpillar that I had was equipped with that type. You should look in your manual for use instructions. The Cat required getting it rolling over good before hitting the ether button for a second.

yes, I read and am going by the manual. It is shaped kind of like a half size aerosol bottle. Looks the same in my tractor as the picture in my manual. I have no idea where to get one, but I will soon find out.

Ya I?ll post more pictures I?ve got about a thousand
in that room . That is a 1/16 scale 9rx and the plow
on top of it is a 1/8 scale John Deere f145 5 bottom
plow

SVcummins - The older the boys , the bigger the "Toys" . We drive around in our full-sized "Toys" and "play" at farming . LOL

Auto Zone but they don't stock it & you have to order a whole case. They will not sell a single can.

I'll revive this post since I didn't get a chance to reply over the weekend. Sounds like fun trip to the farm store, good choice not to buy the tractor toy--after you got tired of the wagon setup you'd want to buy all the other attachments for it. Slippery slope. A little off-topic but last time I was in Wisconsin was a place way up north called Rhinelander. I was there in September and the people I was visiting told me it had snowed already and a bear had come through. Anyway, just some random thoughts on Wisconsin. Very pretty area.

Rhinelander is just down the road, and yes, there are a lot of bear and lots of snow. It's been snowing non-stop for several days, but the ground isn't frozen solid yet, so it's melting some of that snow from the bottom up and not piling up too much.

Oh, you're WAY up north! Well I guess you're used to the cold winters by now, have all the right gear. Here in Md we can get cold snaps down into the teens and sometimes single digits. I don't mind the cold as long as we get some snow with it. For me cold by itself is no fun. Most Marylanders would not share this view LOL
