The good and bad of John Deere 500 grain carts?

I am interested in purchasing a grain cart. I have noticed a few decent looking John Deere 500 carts. They are made by United Farm Tools for John Deere. A model 500 must not really hold 500 bushels? The last one I looked at didn't have any added side boards. Are they balanced well on the axle to provide some weight on the tractor but not an excessive amount? Besides the condition of the augers, tires, and gear box what should I be looking for? Looks like they sell for $3000 to $6000 on dealer lots. Seems like they are worth a lot less on online auctions. Thanks for any ideas/comments.

They are a 500 bushel cart. One of reasons they are cheap is the side auger makes the cart wider and is harder to see when loading with them. Corner and front auger machines are easier to load with. Also 500 bushels is small for today's combines. I would not count on many parts still being available. United Farm Tool has been out of business for Years. So JD would have bearings and such. More than likely gearbox parts but much more than that and your going to be fabricating.

The gearbox went out in my neighbor’s 500 this fall. It blew apart. He is very good about servicing his equipment but admits he forgot to check the gear box lube before harvest started. He said A new gearbox was in the $1000 range so evidently a gearbox is still available.
