Ploughing in sewage sludge with a Fordson "F" on special steel wheels. circa 1930's.

The sludge came from the filter beds in the sewage works, it was spread on the land for fertiliser. It is still done today in some areas only now it is injected into the soil on grassland. There were concerns about the metal content getting back into the food chain.

That must have been some job! I bet at the end of the day you felt like you done something, I don't think it would be very easy with a modern tractor.

I have done that. From my experience the main things that survive are tomato and pot seeds, and condoms. They use to let the septic truck dump on abandoned gravel pits. The county required them to be plowed under once a year. A couple hundred dollars was big money to a 14 year old 1n 1967.

Spread city of Edmonton sewage sludge on farm land around here. Disked in by a JD 9400 4wd tractor pulling a heavy offset disk harrow.
