Dual Front Wheels

I have been looking at front wheel assist tractors for
grain cart duty (John Deere 4955/4960). I have
been thinking, duals on the rear are nice, but what
about the front? Anyone have any experience with
this? Is turning harder with 2 extra front tires? What
are advantages and disadvantages to that type of
setup?

I would NOT recommend duals on the front of a JD 4955/4960. I would want front suspension on tractors with front duals. With regular MFWD axles the duals put a lot of pressure on the wheel bearings. I have seen failures in castings and the bearings.

Didn't that vintage of tractor still have Deere's "caster action" design where the front wheels leaned over quite a bit when turning? I would think that design would be totally incompatible with duals.

I have used a JD 8300 MFWD for pulling gravity wagons, duals on rear but singles on the front, with no issues. I am surprised by the nimble-ness of this size tractor.

I have also run a 8530 MFWD with front duals, but for tillage, not cartage. I am sure the extra weight and traction was helpful tilling, and the footprint would be helpful tending the harvest. I have not been in a position to need the traction- using only gravity wagons and semi, my buddy sticks to headlands and we don't venture out into the field to minimize ruts/compaction

Don't know makes or models but a lot around me are running those duals and the tires are bigger that the rear tires I grew up with.

I put front duals on my 4450 for tillage. I used smaller height tires cuz the inside wheels lean a lot while turning. I found drive tires from a Case SP combine in a junk yard, paid $100 for them. Cut down some spacer bands and used J-Bolts to mount them on the inside tires. Duals were just above the ground going straight ahead. Pics are in archives somewhere- can"t post from photoshop anymore.

Pics are here: go to modern view, search old archives on Tractor Talk....4-23-17, "How about some dual pics", and "Eldon (WA) wants tractors with duals".
