Working on the big Clarks

I have automated one, and have added fuel injection to another that has older controls on it.

It is great others appreciate the magnificence of these engines.

We use compressed air on the cylinders to start them, the sites run about 250 PSI, and they can starve a plant if they do not fire, and require quite a bit of recharge time. I think we have backed the timing off to about 14 ATDC to get enough heat to warm up the turbos. We run jet assist (compressed air boost) on the turbos. Once you load them they warm the turbo right up and produce boost, but that is quite a balancing act. We will run the timing up to about 10 BTDC once the turbos are working.

They really like to detonate if not enough boost.

The smaller ones are much easier to work on.

If things go good, about how long do they run before having to be shut down for service, etc.? I always enjoy your posts.

It depends. You have two things to
maintain. Engine and compressors. If
nothing failed, or the pipeline system
allowed continuous running the first thing
that would come due would be spark plugs.
About 3 months. But in the real world
things are not perfect. Also the pipeline
system could cut back and engines could be
dropped.

As for heavy maintenance. Years ago every
engine and compressor got a complete tear
down. Once a year. Now engines are
analyzed or monitored until something is
picked up then just that is repaired.
Seems to work out about the same.

Good post.

I am seeing more of the big iron being replaced with turbines, they are not as versatile, but can be pulled out and swapped in a couple days. If not for continuous run, they are getting replaced with high speed engines, which should have a much higher failure rate.

In recent years the big thing down here is electric units. 7000 hp to 18000 hp hooked to recip compressor. High speed 800+ rpm. Compressor valves take a beating but the pay is good, so I'm told. Makes getting online much easier. Start the two electric units and close the block gate. (Electrics don't detonate).

Another consideration is exhaust emission.
