Time to clear brush

The first pic shows the jungle like brush I clearing around a lower hold. I'm hauling the bigger stuff to burn pile and pushing the roots into the lowest point. Then cover roots with dirt. Level dirt. Wait for tree trimmer to bring wood chips to cap off before boss begins planting something.

I started yesterday. As you can see one place was kinda wet. Left some ruts.

You folks who live in states that let you do what ever you want to do to your land are sure lucky. That will never happen where I live. To clear new ground, land needs to be purchased from a land bank, it's called mitigation, to replace what was removed. Not the going land rate , but a hefty amount. A burn pile here, you got to be kidding. When I am mowing I need to be careful not to mow new brush land. Welcome to California.

The policy-makers in California all seem to be morons. They are intent on keeping every bit of brush intact, and then wonder why the wild fires in the summer cannot be stopped and burn a thousand homes. I did hear a story of one guy who cleared all the brush from around his home, and it was the only home left standing in the area after a fire. They wanted to fine him for clearing brush, but I never heard if they did. You'd think they'd be too embarrassed.

I'm pleased to report that the poweers-that-be in Washington state, who are usually as silly as those in Cal, have apparently come to their senses. Spending a lot of money now to clear and burn underbrush in the forests, to prevent wildfires. They're finally getting something right!

David G,
I've mentioned goats many times. The BOSS says NO, goats will eat everything including my flowers.

Stan,
I'm not sure of the exact time line, but over 50 years ago the topsoil was removed and sand and gravel was sold to the county for dirt roads.

So this property is 22 acres. Some of it is a lake that by a flood in the early 1900's.

When it was a gravel pit nothing was reclaimed. Lots of hills and holes. I made roads and cleared some brush. Asian honeysuckle has taken over along with many other things. In the spring you can find mushrooms.

In the gravel pit is a huge pit I call the fire pit. I only burn it off when there is snow on the ground or when it raining. I don't want to catch anything on fire. When I'm burning it off, you can't see the fire from the road. All you can see are smoke signals I'm sending up. Still waiting for the Indians to reply.

I've been working on reclaiming the property for over 10 years. The gravel pit is our lower yard. It has more flowers than the upper yard. The cool thing is red and white clover is seeding itself and it's better than weeds. It's our private nature center and doubles over as a target range.

You using a tractor and loader or skid steer?
I have a stump bucket with grapple for removing small trees, brush and roots, then go back with a heavy tooth bucket to fill and level the dirt.

I have a good sized skid steer that makes clearing ground easier.
