Local scrap yard in my area saves pipe, round stock and plate steel for resale,I'm friends with the owner and some of the guys that work there they usually give me whatever I need.

I have a place near me called Fazzio's that has most anything I might need. They do ship, but that's not my point. Check in your yellow pages or google for metal suppliers to see if there is anything similar in your area.

Find a local welding shop and ask where they get steel from. I don't know what your version of cheap steel is but you are going to be paying over a buck a pound plus cut charges and shipping for new steel. As others have said shipping is expensive so finding a local supplier saves a lot. Also buying full lengths saves cutting charges.

There is a place in Glassboro NJ named Joseph Fazzio. They have all kind of steel. When you visit it is like being a kid in a candy store. They have an online site also.

Thanks for agreeing with me.

If you see a building under construction and it has any sort of steel structure, there will be left over material. Cut off fall posts, angle bridging, rebar, occasionally base plates and bolts. Trouble is the timing. After the structure is done, cleanup time starts . Try then.

(quoted from post at 23:51:09 10/27/18) I think all "scrap" yards have a "salable" rack
Not all. The one I go to that pays the best price, refuses to sell anything to individuals. Ive tried several times.

find a local manufacturing plant, sometimes you can get "drop" or scraps that works for your projects.

pending where your at there might be a steel shop near by that does other work as a primary...For example, I go out to the Schuette/Knowles factory(Newton, Wi) and they sell steel stock as well as their factory made equipment.

IF doing BIG projects(or getting into production) then you may have to start looking at industrial supply, such as Alliance Steel or Wis. tube and Steel.

I buy all of my steel - round, flat, angle, square, etc. - in any size from my local welding shop. They are a sizeable fabricating shop and will sell me anything steel I want. Shipping steel from an online supplier is very expensive. By all means buy local.
