John Deere 430 Diesel Garden Tractor Mower Blades Stopped

Hello, I was cutting the field with the JD 430 and the blades stopped turning. I could hear the PTO switch engaging but no blades turning. Does the 72 inch mower deck have a shear bolt or something that is keeping the blades from turning. Thanks for the help!

Does the belt move when you engage? If so
look to the deck. If not the clutch may
have too much clearance and need adjusting.

Since you said you had a 72" mower, it must be a 3-point model driven by an (accessory) rear PTO???

Is the PTO shaft turning?

If NOT, there's splines in part Key #'s 9 and 25, components of the rear PTO that have been known to wear out and strip.

You need to adjust the electric clutch on the front of the engine. There are 3 nuts that need to be turned in a small (equal on all 3) amount, try about a quarter turn at first. I think it takes a 13 MM wrench.

Belt doesn't move when I engage PTO switch. I will take a look at the clutch clearance. I am not too familiar with adjusting these things though. Don't know why this would happen all of a sudden. I was thinking it sheared a pin like on a regular bush hog. My mower is a belly mower underneath but has the drive shaft like a bush hog. Thanks

My JD 430 has the 72" belly mower and has the drive shaft like a rear bush hog. I was thinking it sheared a pin(bolt) like bush hogs do. I am not familiar with these type PTO clutches, etc. Thanks for you comment.

So why would this happen all of a sudden when mowing? I will try to adjust but I have never worked on one of these clutches. I was thinking since it happened suddenly, the thing might have a regular pin that sheared. It should have a pin on the drive shaft for safety in case one hits something too hard. I will try adjusting the 3 bolts. Thanks for your comment.
