hypothetical canadian dairy ?

I was thinking about this today...?. If the Canadian government removed all supply control management and opened the country to milk imports without tariffs and also allowed any size mega-dairy farm to operate in Canada couldn't Canada become a player in the milk export business possibly lowering the farmgate price of milk further then what it would be otherwise for American farmers and farmers world wide, much like what happened when the European union removed their quota system? My thought is its better for American farmers to not be able to export milk to a relatively small country of 30 million? then to have Canadian farmers produce milk unrestricted for export to the u.s or elsewhere who could now produce milk at will and likely produce it at a competitive or cheaper price then American farmers?

Just a thought I had, I could be missing something or I might not be fully informed?

If it was a level playing field it would just be the same ol same ol on both sides of the border. By that I mean if Canadian farms were fully reimbursed for quota and had the same level of government financial support which at present time Canada has none and also if fuel feed and equipment wasn?t so much more expensive. With our dollar so low if Canada was on a level field we could likely land dairy products to US grocery stores noticeably cheaper than they are now.

Could our US markets handle unlimited duty free imports of beef, ethanol, and dairy products?

The farmers in Canada, without supply management, would , in a very short time , produce far more milk than the domestic market could possibly consume. Therefore, with all export restrictions removed, Canada would also be , just like Europe, and the USA, looking to dump there surplus products on the world market, adding even more to the existing problem. Canada has a tremendous amount of untapped agricultural potential to produce both livestock, dairy and poultry, but with no profitable end market, what would be the point? I often hear folks talk about feeding the starving world, and how can we do this if we are losing good farm land to cities. The truth is, we could produce much more food to feed the starving world , if they had the money to pay for it. There is no food shortage in world, just a money shortage.

Since the small farms are producing the exact same product as the mega farms and big farms can do it cheaper then why isn't that a good thing? Small farms need to produce better quality
more desirable products to get the consumers to pay more for their products. Many are doing that in my area BTW with on farm processing direct sales, organic dairies, pastured based
dairying. One farm up close to DC has opened a dairy store on US 29 that sells ice cream, milk shakes and the like made of milk from their farm.

And that also depends on how much longer Americans want to keep pumping billions of tax dollars a year into mega dairies so they can keep producing milk that doesn?t have a market.
