Ferguson vs ford

Last night looked at a to or te 20 with a westendorf loader, guy said he replaced the distributor shaft cause it was bent, what would cause that? It was switched over to 12 volt, rears are at about 60%, some welding was done on the 3pt. Arm, started good engine sounds good. What do I need to know on the difference between the ford and the Ferguson,I own a 2n at present, thanks for any help.

For my .02 cents worth the Ferguson is a better tractor. The 2 N still uses the basic Model A ford style engine in it. The Ferguson has an overhead valve engine in it. The Z-134(?) Continental engine that is subject to sometimes cracks between the cylinders.
It is most likely newer than your 2 N because it came about after the Ford-Ferguson split in about 1947.

It's not an upgrade from your 2N. No live hydraulics, no position control.
Hold out for a Ford 600,800, 2000,3000 or 4000.
They will have a Lot more features for not much more $.

There's not that much difference in a Ferguson and a Ford. They are cousins in design.

A couple things to be aware of...

No power steering. If it's going to get a lot of use, be ready to build some arm muscles! The steering and front end will be stressed.

No live hydraulics. Unless the loader is run off an engine driven pump, it will only work with the clutch engaged.

A tractor that old, realistically, unless it's been exceptionally well maintained be ready to do some work on it.

As for a bent distributor, about the only thing that could bend one, (short of being hit from the outside by accident), would be a gear failure. If the gear did fail, or the wrong gear/distributor was installed, good chance there will be damage to the cam gear. Not an easy fix.

The engine on the TO 20 is a Continental. It's overhead valve, which makes servicing the valves easier. Down side, those blocks have a history of cracking in the web between the center cylinders.

But, for their era, they were good tractors.

The Fergie is a better tractor. But it's not that much more than the Ford. Like someone else said, you want to at least get up into the Hundred series Ford or better, a 35 or 65 Massey Ferguson or get up into their Hundred series.

The 2 things I would be conserned about would be the distributor and being converted to 12V, I would want the orignal 6 volt. And I used a loader on my 2N for years off the built in pump with no problems. And same mounted implements that fit the 2N fit the TO 20 to meaning tractor overseas as the USA and TE means tractor england and would be older than a TO and harder in the US to get parts for. All the others mentiond some would have advantages over either the 2N or TO 20 and would also have some dissadvantages.
