1973 Ford 4000 3cyl gas ignition problem

Ok so I had a local guy overhaul my tractor. Ever since I got it back the points will not stay opened. He swapped out the old distributor with a new aftermarket one. I have noticed that the new one does not have the breaker plate at the bottom. I even tried the pertronix system in it and does not work. They said because the breaker plate was missing it might not work. The only other thing I can think of is the damn screws have to many washers and they keep slipping while driving. Oh yeah o can get the points set at 025 and it runs. Once I start driving it goes bad. Any help or suggestions bring them.

Thanks

Michael

A drop of Lock Tight. Not the really good stuff, just the light duty so you can take it apart again.

If the after market distributor uses the same points, I would think the Pertronix should fit. What I call the breaker plate is what the points attach to, what is missing?

As for the points not staying adjusted, either the screws are not tightening down (reason for the washers?), the rub block is dry and wearing down (should have a tiny spot of grease), or the shaft bushing is loose (even though new, with aftermarket anything is possible).

Any way to get the original distributor back? Even if worn, the Pertronix will still work.

1. WHY was the distributor replaced with one likely from "The Land of Almost Right"?

2. Did you get the original distributor back?

3. "I have noticed that the new one does not have the breaker plate at the bottom"

NOT sure what you've got going on there, a photo sure would help.

4. I wouldn't waste my time installing a junktronix on a dead horse. Thought they were the "bees knees" 'til couple of 'em over the years dropped DEAD on trucks or equipment my customers NEEDED at a critical time. NOT swell to be the guy that sold/installed 'em!

I have no idea why he replaced it? And yes he said he through it away so I did.not get the old one back. Here are some pics of how I installed the pertronix and how it looks with the points. Yes the new one does not have the breaker plate.

Ok so after doing this over and over I have came to the conclusion Everytime I toghten the top screw it also tightens the points. There is no way to screw it tight via washers loc waskers or just a screw itself. Is this a distributor issue? I have used 3 different brand new points and the same results.
