Military Grade?

I drove a brand new 2.5 ton truck off of a railroad car in Arizona. Set out around the US testing radio gear that was mounted in the truck. I traveled 5o miles and the brand new REO army truck quit. I called the nearest military base which was an Air force Base in Tucson. They came out to pull the truck to the shop, didn't have a tow bar with them, so hooked it up loose and used the engine to break it because of no air for brakes. Cam gear had fallen off, which caused the initial problem, no safety wires on the bolts. No cam gear, no oil pump so they ruined the engine. Shop put a new engine in it. The new engine ran to Utah and froze up. One rod bearing was turned upside down, so it didn't oil. Finally made the round trip on three new engines, probably less than 3000miles. That was in 1958

Local college bought 2 surplus 6x6's. I warned'em against it. Used one as a donor to get one on the road. 9 out of the first 10 trips it had to be towed back to the shop. They finally sold it for $300.

When I hear that commercial I just roll my eyes. What a load...

All it means is the type of aluminum they use in the body panels is also specified for something made out of aluminum in the military... and EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY THAT USES ALUMINUM.

That is because Americans are just plain stupid. Every thing on God's green earth has a Mil-Spec.
