On a squealing tractor...

Hi all,

I have a David Brown Cropmaster that has a loud high pitched squeal.

It has been sitting for a week and the water level has gone down, and the oil level has gone up (with a milky colour...).

When I went to start it this evening, it was hydro-locking.

To give you some history, I picked it up from a farmer who was trying to get rid of it, and he has no idea of its history. The exhaust was not covered, and some of the gearbox bearings had fallen out, locking up the engine...

The squeal is just a recent development (maybe for a month or so?), and the radiator has been holding water well for a while.

I would like to know what the squeal is, and whether you think the head is cracked.

I am grateful for any advice, as this is a special project of mine and I have put a lot (and I mean a LOT!) of hours (and months) into this machine to get it running!

Thanks!

Joshua

QUIT TRYING TO START IT!!! Water in the oil, hydro-locking, you've either got a bad head gasket or a cracked head or block. It won't get any better by being run, and it will probably get a whole lot worse. Time for a tear-down and repair of the problem.

The squeal could be a worn bushing in the Water pump or generator, but like others have said, don't run it!

I agree with not trying to start it. I know nothing about that tractor but you could also have cylinder sleeves leaking coolant into the oil if it is a wet sleeve engine. If it is a gas a loose intake manifold can make a squealing sound. In that case it would vary when revving up the engine it would quit when the vacuum drops and come back when the engine is up to speed and the govenor levels off. Also a hydraulic relief valve bypassing will squeal. Care to explain more about how bearings in the gear case can fall out and lock an engine? Good luck.

Yes, its from the manifold.
The David Brown gearbox has 3 shafts. As the gearbox was full of water the bearings in the top shaft rusted out, dropping it onto the second shaft, they did not mesh and thus prevented the engine from turning over.
Thanks for that!
