Do you think I need a taller ladder?

16 feet just isn't enough. I did tie
ladder of at the top.

you know about the glass with water in it question?
Someone says it is half full.
Someone says it is half empty.
Which one are you?
A true engineer say's that it is simply the wrong size container.
Personally it is not a case that your ladder is too short but rather the tree is too tall, so no, you do not need a taller ladder.

If I can reach it from the 4th step of a 6' step ladder, I'll do it. Any higher than that and we have some decisions to make.

you just need to move things around so you can get your tractor with front loader in there and put your ladder in the loader bucket. Then you just need a ladder to climb up to the loader bucket so you can start up the other ladder. And have an observer handy with the 91 dialed on their phone.

you need to leave the branches on the tree in a ladder style. Cut the top off first with a rope to guide each branch down 1 at a time. takes a while but with all the branches under you, you actually can't really fall as your sorta stuck in there. I have done ever green like that and works quite well.

No need for a taller ladder- Once you get past the "if I fall I'll break my neck" height, additional height doesn't matter.

I went by a new house one day and it was built into the side of a hill. They were putting siding on the end which was on a slope They had a 2x4 on one leg of the ladder so it would set on the slope. They had to be 20 foot up in the air working

Are you removing branches for your dish. That's what I had to do. Back your pickup up to the tree. You can get another three feet higher. What I have noticed the ladder doesn't look very high looking up from the ground. It's so much higher, from the top looking down. Stan

I have a best friend and a bil both now (age 70) and about 50%+++ crippled due to tree trimming ladder accidents.
A broken back on one and a smashed femur on the other...weeks in the hospital.
How much are those limbs worth?
Hospital bills in the high 6 figures...like $500,000 plus (insurance).... Neither would pull that stunt again.

Be careful George ! Some of the picks on here remind me of when we were building our 40x60 barn. 16' eaves and has to be close to 30' at the peak. So one Saturday morning I go to the farm and there is dad. He took a gravity wagon and put boards and plywood across it. On top of that he had two tiers of scaffolding somehow chained to the gravity wagon. On top of the scaffolding he was standing on a step ladder putting boards on the end of the barn. Nuts ! Forgot to add he also had the low side tires of the wagon shimmed with 2x8's. I don't like heights especially like that setup. Neither my brother or I would go up to help. The next weekend he rented a man lift !

Thanks John for all the ideas.
I think I'll put on a safety harness, get on the roof, tie off to the tree and trim a few more branches to clear the power line. Then I'll attach another rope to top of tree. I'll get back on the ladder. Tie off ladder and safety harness to the bottom part of the tree. When I cut the top portion of the tree, a second person pull the top to the southeast clearing the Satellite dishes.

If all goes bad, I might make the 5 o'clock news. I'm betting I'll live to post back.

Plenty of ladder.

A guy that used to work for my dad doing windows and siding was known to put a step ladder on top of an aluminum scaffolding plank, sometimes in conjunction with a milk crate. He moved to Florida and was hit by a car while he was walking home from a night of drinking at a tavern. Of all the things I saw that guy do and he gets taken out by a car, poor SOB.

George, simplify the matter, call the Power Company and have them reroute the power lines. All you have to do is give them permission to put a new power pole in the middle of your yard on the other side of your Garage. Never have to worry about trimming the tree again. lol

Hay hay hay,
No one was watching.
Thanks for your positive comment. "are you as dumb as you look up there?"
I would expect all YT members to be polite to each other.
You can do better.
George

Never recommend using a ladder to take limbs down but it was wise of you to tie it off at the top but I have seen where the limbs come back and kick the bottom of the ladder out or even break the ladder be carefull

George, as we get older we tend to ignore the signs of aging. Reactions are slower, balance is lessened, strength is diminished. As I said in my earlier post, in my small circle of friends and family, 2 have suffered MAJOR life changing injuries and one has died from falling off a ladder while trimming their own trees. That is enough evidence to make me think that any of us old geezers that climb a ladder to trim our own trees.....is committing an act of stupidity.

You are welcome to your own opinion. And good luck.
