Input shaft

Ok guy sold the crawler I wanted. But have a chance to buy a 1969 1010 dozer. But guy said transmission slips and said it was cause of a stripped shaft. Is he talking about the input shaft? If so can it be replaced without pulling tranny? Sorry I know nothing about tractors

THe 1010 engine was arguably the worst (modern) engine in JD history. If it is running well, has no coolant in the oil, and no
oil in the coolant, it might be OK. My brother has one and so far so good. Knowing it needs work, are you willing to have it
repaired by a shop? Get an estimate before purchase! The engines have all 4 cylinders groupae together on a deck plate. Pricy
it is. Undercarrage in mediocre shape is also a negative. Nah. Jim

John,

Does this machine have a direction reverse ( lever on the right side of the console)? If so, there could be several things that is failing, causing the symptoms of slipping. If it is a gear reverse, the spline on the main input shaft or the coupling between the transmission and shaft, or the coupling may have lost a pin holding the coupling allowing the coupling to moving forward. I think the engine will have to come out to repair either. Look for a parts book showing expanded views on Johndeere.com.

50 year old dozer that he says tracks are "FAIR" run do not walk away, if you are not a good mechanic and money to burn. You will have a bunch of money in something that is not worth much even if you get it going. Most if not all folks buying a small dozer want a 6 way blade no days. Best place for that deal is large boat anchor or slow boat to CHINA.LOL

It runs good and moves. Just didnt no if you had to pull tranny to change input shaft. I know there is a cover to look into it. I've been an auto mechanic for 35 years. But if you guys say walk away than I will.

A former neighbor had one I think. He
restored it, but there was a stripped gear
that was made of unobtainium. He had one
custom made, took the machine shop a couple
tries to get it right. $$$$$

But I comes with a wench! How can you go
wrong?

RUN, RUN, RUN. That machine and all older JD crawlers are a money pit. Much better off with a Case of the same vintage.

I think if a splined shaft is slipping it will not move very far, and will make a horrible noise. It's probably the clutch slipping. If so maybe the clutch needs to be adjusted. Still a major repair if the clutch needs replacing. Just a thought. Stan
