Went to Mack Days Truck Show

I like the B models as well, looks like a pretty good show. Had a chance to buy a single axle B with dump many years ago for $800. Probably best I didn't but it was a neat-looking truck and was actually being used.

I live in the Lititz area and was there also. Love the old chain drive Macks.

(quoted from post at 19:20:17 10/07/18) Gold dog means mack engine, tranny and rear ends.

That's not quite right.
I have had and seen plenty of "All" Mack's and they all had Chrome bulldogs.

The Gold bulldog designates a Mack with the Maxidyne Engine
When it was first introduced.

There is blue dump I see at 324 or so
that works around Erie PA a good bit.
Not sure what motor but has unique
sound.

There are what looks like 3 B model Mack trucks sitting in the field behind the D.T.S. Trucking Company on Ga. Hwy-15 south about 5
miles South of Tennille, Ga. They have been there for several years. a red one, a blue one and a white one. They
don't look too bad and look pretty complete from the road as I pass by there.

I emailed Harvey Eckert, who corresponded with Don Schumacker (who many of us know to be the Curator of the Mack Museum and the Archivist) some time ago, and kept the response, which Harvey was kind enough to send back to me:

Don writes: "The Mack Bulldog ornament was patented in October 1932. It was released as Part Number 4BF26. In December 1937, it was redrawn and the part number changed to 27RU217. This was a chrome-plated zinc die casting. It did not change until December 1941 when the finish was changed to a painted #775R Mack Gray finish. In September 1944, the finish reverted back to chrome-plating.

In September 1947, the part number was raised to 217RU217A; the attaching studs were changed to cast-in female thread brass fasteners. The P1 version was chrome-plated. In June 1967, the 14 karat gold-plated P2 was released. In June 1968, the gold plating was replaced with 14 karat gold alloy.

In December 1979, the ornament was redesigned to incorporate shorter ears and tail to make it more friendly when using it as the handle to tip the conventional models’ hoods. The part number was raised to 217RU217B and the patent number was changed from 87931 to 1,387,477. The P1 part was again chrome plated while the P2 finish was “gold flash.”

Starting in 1966/1967, the original “gold” ornaments signified that a vehicle featured the Mack Maxidyne engine and Maxitorque transmission. All other Mack trucks used the chrome plated ornaments. Starting with the introduction of the CL Model in 1990, CH and CL vehicles with the high-level interior trim package utilized the gold ornaments.

Starting in 2007, the gold ornament indicated that a vehicle had an all-Mack powertrain, i.e., Mack engine, Mack transmission, and Mack axles. This is its current usage.

Let me know if we can be of further help.

Thanks, Don Schumaker

The last good Macks were the B models after that the CH ones were junk. I had one and spent more time at the hospital than on the road. I'll take my Pete's more power better wiring and better trucks. Both my Pete's are over a million miles.
The CH models had the alt A/c compressor all down in the frame with no room to work on windshield tank was over the turbo so it would melt in hot weather with a small bit of heat off the turbo.

If you serve a lot of time in B models when you were young you look back fondly.Try getting back into one when you get older and after an hour or so it will be,what was I thinking? I got my license in a B-61 in 1976.I thought that truck was just the cats meow.12 years later I wound up driving it for the owner,I thought a little less of it then.I ran one that I owned until the late 90's pulling a hydraulic tilt trailer to haul tractors, but I got my fill of that and sold the truck.I still have the tilt trailer,I've had ideas about moving tractors again but I don't think it's gonna happen.
