Steering Problems

I have a MF 253 tractor that has major hydrostatic steering problems. I have replaced the power steering pump, power steering rotor motor, power steering wheel cylinders still have problems. The steering wheel wants to free wheel left and right while in operation. Steering wheel will rotate left and right and stop when the wheels attain maximum turn ratio. However, when driving the tractor the steering wheel free wheels and the tires wonder from side to side and need constant correction. I have bled the power steering pump many times and doesn't help at all. Also, would like to know if there is an adjustment on the steering motor to alleviate the problem? Any advice would be appreciated.

What was the original problem? Has anything changed since the problem was first addressed?

The steering cylinders, you say they still have problems. If one or both are bypassing internally, as in blown seals or the piston has come off the rod, that could very well be the problem. They need to be tested.

The pump is new, so it can reasonably be assumed is working.

The plumbing, is there any doubt about it being correct? If any lines were reconnected wrong it will not work.

As for the orbitrol, no, there is no adjustment. That is a very complex component, don't go into it. If new, it is "probably" not the problem. It is possible that it could be defective, but not likely.

My first move would be to test the cylinders and double check the plumbing.

Sure sounds like air in the system. My Ford
service manual says for causes of erratic
steering... Rotor vanes in motor damaged or
sticking, Air in system. Are you using the
recommended oil? Maybe you got a bad motor?
