I am in Wisconsin. He replied that he is in a near by town, but the area code for his phone number, is for New Jersey. Should I call him back or is that an invitation for trouble?

Hello see,

Phone number is no indication where he is at. Just where he bought the phone.
You can call and ask him where is is at and see what he comes up with. You know the area, see if he knows,

GUIDO.

I don't think that in it self is trouble. I have some renters in one of my rentals here in Mn. They moved up from Texas 3 yrs. ago and kept their Texas phone.

A friend moved to Arizona and kept her number from Waterloo IA. Another friends wife came from Western IA to Eastern IA kept her same number. I don't know what to tell you. Could be authentic or a scam.
With cell phones being to move and take your number, it is hard to judge. Scammers can route their calls under false pretenses. You are leary so you have an advantage.

Call him back and if a real voice its probably okay. Could also be a telemarketer though. If computer voice RUN

Thank you. I just thought that if they had moved from New Jersey, why would they have brought with them the part that I am looking for.
I will call him.

I don't call anyone off craigslist.I put my number in the add reply. At one time i would call them, but all i got was people who didn't remember calling or people who called 20 adds and wanted you to explain what your trying to sell.

Area codes don't mean much anymore, our son lived in California for 6 years and had a New York phone no. I would call him, but don't give any extra information. If you use a smartphone that you also email with there is some risk involved.

Basically as everyone is telling you. When your provider, sprint, att, verizon, etc. applies for phone numbers they get a block of thousands of numbers in an area code. So you can be in area 123,567,876,543 etc.and then were ever you bought your phone or what blocks of numbers have not been assigned yet. Sounds crazy but I know a person with a Florida number. Was there for a month and bought a phone.

I bought a used trailer last month. The ad gave an area not far from Pequot Lakes. Phone number was for St. Paul. Spoke with the guy and he said trailer was at his Dad's house. He gave me his Dad's number - was from Wisconsin.

In the end, everything was on the up-and-up. The Dad had the trailer as they had just recently moved there, and the son didn't want the trailer any longer.

----

A neighbor of ours has a number from some state far, far away. When he got his cell phone, the phone company screwed up and gave him the wrong area code. He kept the number anyway.

(quoted from post at 19:50:27 10/03/18) Why not call the number? What are they going to do grab you by the neck thru the phone?

For one thing, sell the number for ten cents which bring's a bunch of calls from telemarketers. I never put my # in ads.

My sister lives 22 miles from me in Arkansas but
when she calls on her cell phone it shows a call
coming from San Diego California,

Call him. Why worry? You can always block his #.
Telemarketers spoof #'s so area codes mean nothing.
The person may have recently moved so his area code means nothing.

And you didn't stop by?

My son moved from Colorado to Michigan and started a business in Mi. about 10 years ago. He still uses his Colorado cell phone number for his business. Area code doesn't always mean he's not local.

When people move their land line phone numbers change, but they keep their old cell phone numbers including the area code. If the rest of his message checks out as legitimate, I'd call him back.

One piece of advice: Do NOT offer him the "easy out" by ASKING if he recently moved. Let him offer that information on his own, and pay attention to how much time he spends explaining himself. If he just casually mentions it, I'd be more apt to believe him than if he makes a big production out of it.

By no means is this a 100% reliable way to flesh out scammers, but most scammers don't think that far ahead.
