John Deere 1953 Model 40- Steering almost locked up

Helping a friend that now has his families 1953 John Deere model 40. Major problem is steering is almost inop. I have removed or disconnected most assemblies and components that are part of the steering assembly. In the John deere parts manual item #5 on page 50-5 steering shaft and item #32 on page 55-4 spindle, upper are all that is left connected. Still cannot get any rotating motion when applying an 18" pipe wrench. It is a wide front end and he did say someone may have hit something with a front wheel while driving, fence post or tree. Question is, what is bent or seized in the steering pedestal and how do I get things out/ disassembled? This is the last item for making it a working tractor again. Thanks for all insights or info.

If it were mine .........
I would remove the worm from the steering box to make sure the problem is either
a) in the pedestal and further down, or
b) a jammed up pin which runs in the worm

. Jcarrol has the answer . I have to wonder why you are forcing something that is obviously broken? Forcing it will only smash more parts .
Take a minute and remove a few bolts and lift the worm gear box’s cover off. One of the pin(s) that engage in the wormgear will be busted off and jamming the gears .
I should know . Replaced the two moderately worn originals and replaced with new pins . Busted both of the misorable little cusses in less than two hours of operation .

Must not have made myself clear. Those parts have been removed and are no longer on the tractor. The only parts that remain are the two parts that are inside the pedestal and remain unseen. The worm gear is gone. Tie rods removed from pedestal. Nothing remains or is attached to the above mentioned parts inside the pedestal. There is now no worm gear, so nothing for studs to come in contact with. What is left should rotate easily because nothing is attached to it.But it does not. Just wanted to make it clear I have done more then simply throw a pipe wrench on it to force it to move. The question is how do I get the two remaining steering parts out of the pedestal. One or both are either damaged or rusted in place.

Thanks

Tim

Has been my experience that once a topic moves to page 2 so quickly its a dead topic. Will try taking my parts manual to the local dealership. See if they have any info. Wish me luck.
