Why would a tractor do this???

Hi all,
I've picked up a couple more fergys tonight - and we had to pull them onto our truck with the guy's Massey Ferguson 135 petrol. It wouldn't start. Put a fresh battery in - lever in start position, and still wouldn't go. Managed to crank it with a starting handle, and it ran fine for 10 minutes, then it cut out. Cranked it again and it ran for a couple minutes. Finally wouldn't start at all, then heard a funny sound...
The generator was to hot to touch, and it was turning itself around inside itself with engine at standstill.
Why do you think it would do that?
After we heard it doing that, the starter motor suddenly decided to start working, but the generator had killed a freshly charged battery so dead it hardly turned over.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Joshua

Thanks moonlite37! But if so, is the generator no good? Or does the regulator need a clean up? Or will it need replacing?
I appreciate all your help!
Thanks!
Joshua

Then gen is good or it wouldn't be trying to run. Best bet would be to replace the regulator.
