Electric fence

Built some new fence. Need to run across a couple gate openings, underground. Planning on using 1/2” conduit but wondering about the wire. I’ve found that using Romex, after a year or so I’ll get shorts through the insulation. Would it do to just run electric fence wire through the conduit or do I need something insulated and specifically for electric fencing?

They make wire specifically for that purpose, available at any farm store usually. Have hundereds of feet of it buried around the place here.

Thought they did. Didn’t know how big of a roll it came in. Don’t need a lot so was wondering if regular fence wire would work.

I wouldn't. conduit could fill with water, and short it out.

When we had to run electric fence around a gate we put two Really,
realy tall wood lath pieces. The other gate had two full lenth pieces
of one inch pipe strapped to the big gate posts. Run the wire with
insulators over top like a power line. Just make sure it is high
enough a farm wagon won't hit it.

I considered that but think we want to go underground.

Typical romex is designed to ?hold in? fairly low voltage of 120-220 and fairly high amps of 20-200.

Electric fence wire, insulated, is designed to hold in very high voltage, 10,000 plus, and very low amps, less than 1.

So the house wiring isn?t designed to work right for the job.

The fleet and farm supply stores should have 10 to 100 foot rolls of insulated fencer wire, some have rolls of hollow insulation you can push a
wire through for very short uses.

I bury the heavy insulated fence wire inside a 1/2" PVC conduit. Where the conduit comes up the gate posts on each side, I top it off with an inverted "U" to help it shed water. I drill a PVC pipe cap to keep the bugs out. You can buy the heavy insulated wire in 50' rolls. I have also crossed under the township road through a 15" metal culvert. Again - heavy insulated wire inside a 1/2" PVC conduit. That way I can use one fencer on both sides of the road.

most household type wire is 600 volt insulation. If you must go under ground I suggest going to NAPA and getting metalic spark plug wire. Belden part number BEL 734803. This is solid wire type with many thousands volt insulation. web says $0.70 per foot 100 ft rolls they may have open roll for cut to length needed.

Yes! I buried about 50 feet of it last year. Works very good.

. High voltage will poke a hole through low voltage insulation . How much is a bulk roll of solid core ignition wire going for in your area ?

18 years ago I did exactly what you are doing.. I buried 1" conduit under gates ran solid insulated wire through and
out the other side..I would add when you come up out of the ground come up 12" or so and put a two 90's so water wont
go in..

You need underground electric fence wire...link below is to Kencove.

I'll run it through 3/4" pvc conduit just to protect the wire, makes it easy to pull in a new piece should it become necessary.
