picked up my first JD to rehab, did a lot of farmalls but no deeres. got what i thought was a deal, new rears along with new 3 point. motor is stuck. will post pics tomorrow when i have some light. it's a "B"

And the guy that designed the clutch to be pushed while trying to hook up to anything should have been hung. Only a moron would design it like that. Should pull back to engage and push ahead to disengage. Cat is that way and much easier to hitch up implements to.

Opposing thinking is that pull back engages when you fall off the back ensuring that you get run over.

My 1935 JD B had a locked up engine on it. I made sure the cylinders did not have water in them and then jacked up the front end about 18 inches and fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a week or so. Being hand start I made a flywheel wrench and put it in the 2 hole of the flywheel and pulled on it a few times and it freed up and has been free ever since. It has been in my family since 1940 by the way and I played on it as a kid

Well there is a barn yard full of them here 10. I for one am very glad John Deere designed the clutch the way they did!!

Forward means GO, back means STOP, same way with rains on a horse, pull back means for them to stop. I would not want a hand clutch that you would pull back to go, just opposite of normal reaction. I owned 5 hand clutch Deeres and liked them, only thing is they had a bit too fast reverce. Also had a MM for a while and if I remember correctly after almost 50 years Forward was go, back was stop. The only way for a hand clutch to pull back would be to dissengage while you were holding it to shift and release with it going forward again to engage.
